The Lakshmi-Ganesh puja, step by stepलक्ष्मी-गणेश पूजा, चरण-दर-चरण
For the home puja without a pandit. Say the mantras as written; where Sanskrit is hard, say the meaning in your own words. The full vidhi and katha
- 1
Set the place
Bathe after sunset, wear clean or new clothes. In the north-east of the home, or facing east or north, spread the cloth on the chowki, make a bed of rice, set Ganesh and Lakshmi on it with Lakshmi to the right of Ganesh. Draw a swastik with roli before them. Light the main ghee lamp to the right of the deities and a small lamp to the left.
- 2
Achman and sankalp
Sip water three times from the right palm, then sprinkle water on yourself and the samagri with the mantra. Take rice, a flower and a coin in the right hand with a little water, and say the sankalp: your name, gotra, the place, the day (Kartik Amavasya, the year) and the wish — the Lakshmi-Ganesh puja for the home's lasting prosperity. Let the water fall into a plate.
ॐ अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सर्वावस्थां गतोऽपि वा। यः स्मरेत् पुण्डरीकाक्षं स बाह्याभ्यन्तरः शुचिः॥
- 3
Kalash sthapana
Fill the kalash with water, drop in the supari, the coin and a few grains of rice, place the five mango leaves at its mouth and the coconut on top, tie the mauli around its neck, and set it on a bed of rice beside Lakshmi. Mark it with a swastik. The kalash stands for Varuna and all the tirthas; worship it with roli, akshat and a flower.
- 4
Ganesh puja first
No puja begins without Ganesh. Offer him water, the tilak of roli and chandan, akshat, durva, a flower, the sacred thread, dhoop, deep and a modak or laddoo, with his mantra. Ask that the puja go without obstruction.
ॐ गं गणपतये नमः
- 5
Lakshmi's sixteen offerings
Invite Lakshmi (avahan) with a flower held at the heart, offer her a seat, water for the feet, achman, a bath of panchamrit then clean water, the vastra and chunri, chandan and kumkum, akshat, the garland and lotus, perfume, dhoop, deep, the naivedya of kheel-batashe and sweets, the paan with supari, a dakshina coin, and the pradakshina. Say the Lakshmi mantra 11 or 108 times with the mala or on the fingers.
ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं श्रीं कमले कमलालये प्रसीद प्रसीद श्रीं ह्रीं श्रीं ॐ महालक्ष्म्यै नमः
Mahalakshmi Ashtakam, read after the mantra - 6
Kuber, the ledger and the safe
Place the cash box, the jewellery or the coin, and the new ledger before Lakshmi. Draw the swastik and write 'Shubh Labh' and the new year's date on the first page. Worship Kuber with roli and akshat, asking him to guard what Lakshmi gives. Businesses do the full bahi-khata puja and the staff takes a tilak.
ॐ यक्षाय कुबेराय वैश्रवणाय धनधान्याधिपतये धनधान्यसमृद्धिं मे देहि दापय स्वाहा
- 7
Saraswati and the tools of work
Put a tilak on the pen, the books, the laptop or the instruments of your work, and on the kalash of water. Lakshmi stays where learning and work are honoured.
- 8
Shri Suktam, Chalisa or Kanakadhara
One text, read or sung together: the Lakshmi Chalisa for most homes, the Kanakadhara Stotram where Sanskrit is at ease, the Shri Suktam with a pandit. Children read the aarti words from the library page; the player reads it aloud for those who cannot.
Lakshmi Chalisa with meaning and audio - 9
Aarti
First Ganesh's aarti 'Jai Ganesh Deva', then Lakshmi's 'Om Jai Lakshmi Mata', and in many homes 'Om Jai Jagdish Hare' after it. Camphor or the ghee lamp, the bell and the conch; pass the flame to everyone, hands over the flame to the eyes.
Om Jai Lakshmi Mata, the aarti with audio - 10
Deepdaan: the lamps go out to the home
Light every lamp from the puja lamp: the main door first (both sides), then tulsi, the kitchen, the water place, every room's threshold, the stairs, the roof edge and the back door, so no corner stays dark. Lamps for the ancestors and one at the crossroads or a temple for those who keep it.
- 11
Prasad and the night
Distribute the kheel-batashe and sweets to everyone, elders first, and send some to the neighbours. Eat after the puja. Keep the main lamp burning all night, do not sweep after the puja, and keep the home lit and awake late: Lakshmi is said to visit the house that stays awake.
- 12
Next morning
Before sunrise, sweep the home outwards and carry the old year's rubbish out: this is the Alakshmi nissarana, the sending out of want. Then Govardhan Puja in its morning window.

Year-long prosperity: the astrologyवर्ष भर समृद्धि: ज्योतिष
On the Diwali new moon the Sun and Moon stand together in Tula (Libra), Venus's sign, and Venus is Lakshmi's graha. The fixed Vrishabha lagna that rises after sunset is Venus's sign too, which is why the puja is timed to it: wealth given in a fixed lagna stays, the muhurat rule says. In a kundli, money is read from four places: the 2nd house (what is kept), the 11th (what comes in), Jupiter (the karaka of wealth) and Venus (the karaka of Lakshmi). Where their lords sit decides the year's remedy.
Below, one act for the year by Moon sign (find yours here if you do not know it), and for signed-in members, pointers from their own kundli.
One act for the year, by Moon sign
Mesh (Aries)lord Mars
Keep Lakshmi puja with red flowers and a ghee lamp; a Tuesday Hanuman Chalisa and a monthly donation of red lentils or jaggery keeps the Mars of this sign working for earnings, not quarrels. Do not lend money on Diwali night.
Vrishabh (Taurus)lord Venus
Venus is Lakshmi's own graha. Offer kheer or a white sweet in the puja, keep a Friday fast or the Vaibhav Lakshmi vrat through the year, and read the Kanakadhara Stotram on Fridays. Keep the puja place and the safe clean and scented.
Mithun (Gemini)lord Mercury
Ganesh before Lakshmi, always, with durva and a green cloth. Keep the accounts written up every Wednesday; donate green moong or feed green fodder to a cow once a month. Mercury gives money through trade and words, so keep both clean.
Kark (Cancer)lord Moon
A silver coin in the puja and in the safe through the year. Offer water to the Moon and read the Shri Suktam or the Lakshmi Chalisa on each Purnima; kheer to the family on Monday evenings. The Moon of this sign saves when the home is at peace.
Singh (Leo)lord Sun
Surya arghya at sunrise with red flowers, the Aditya Hridaya on Sundays, and a wheat or jaggery donation each month. Lakshmi's puja with a lotus. The Sun earns through authority and name, so keep your word in every deal this year.
Kanya (Virgo)lord Mercury
Lakshmi and Ganesh worshipped together, with the ledger: this sign's wealth is in order and detail. Lakshmi Chalisa on Wednesdays, a green cloth over the cash box, and a small fixed saving on every payday rather than a large one at the year's end.
Tula (Libra)lord Venus
Diwali's new moon falls in Tula, Venus's own sign, which is why this night belongs to Lakshmi. Read the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam daily through Kartik; donate white cloth or rice on a Friday; keep a pair of lamps, never one, at the door through the year.
Vrishchik (Scorpio)lord Mars
A red cloth under the Lakshmi idol and a copper coin in the kalash. Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays, and a clear rule for the year: no loan given or taken on a Tuesday. Mars of this sign gains through courage and loses through secrecy, so keep the family told of the money.
Dhanu (Sagittarius)lord Jupiter
Jupiter is the karaka of wealth. A yellow cloth on the chowki, chana dal and turmeric in the offering, the Guru mantra on Thursdays, and the Satyanarayan katha on Kartik Purnima. Give a tenth of any windfall this year to a teacher, a temple or a student.
Makar (Capricorn)lord Saturn
Saturn pays slowly and for long. A mustard-oil lamp under a peepal on Saturday evenings, black sesame or a blanket donated in winter, and the Shani stotra. Keep a steady recurring saving; Saturn rewards the habit, not the gamble. Lakshmi with a blue lotus or a blue flower if you can find one.
Kumbh (Aquarius)lord Saturn
Saturn again, with service as the road. Feed the people who work for you or around you on Diwali, keep the Saturday lamp and the sesame donation, and read the Shani stotra. Money comes through groups, networks and long work this year; keep every promise to a worker.
Meen (Pisces)lord Jupiter
A tulsi lamp every evening through the year, the Vishnu puja with Lakshmi (she stays where Vishnu is), turmeric and a yellow flower on Thursdays, and the Kanakadhara Stotram. This sign gives easily; keep a fixed share for giving and the rest will stay.
Seven habits, for the whole year
- A lamp at the door or the tulsi every evening at sunset (pradosh), the hour the Diwali puja itself is timed to.
- Friday is Lakshmi's day: the puja place cleaned, a white or pink flower, the Chalisa or the Ashtakam once.
- The ledger written up: the home's or the shop's accounts kept current, since Lakshmi is worshipped with Ganesh, the lord of order, not alone.
- A fixed share given: a tenth, a twentieth, whatever is honest — to a temple, a student, a worker — before it is spent. Daan is the half of the prosperity vrat that most people drop.
- No money lent, borrowed or paid out on Amavasya and after sunset on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the old trading rule.
- Shri Suktam or the Lakshmi Chalisa on each Purnima, and the Satyanarayan katha on Kartik Purnima, the fifteenth day after Diwali.
- The main door kept clean, lit and unobstructed: Lakshmi is said to enter through it and to turn back from a dark or cluttered one.
Questions · प्रश्न
When is Diwali in 2026?
Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday, 8 November 2026 (Kartik Amavasya, New Delhi). Dhanteras is Friday, 6 November 2026; Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj follow it.
What is the Lakshmi Puja muhurat on Diwali 2026?
For New Delhi, the pradosh period after sunset overlapping the fixed Vrishabha lagna: 17:54 – 19:50. Pick your city above for its own clock; the day stays the same across India.
What is needed for the Diwali puja?
Lakshmi and Ganesh idols, a chowki with a red or yellow cloth, a kalash with mango leaves and a coconut, roli, kumkum, haldi, akshat, mauli, flowers and a garland, dhoop, deep, camphor, panchamrit, paan-supari, kheel-batashe and sweets, and clay lamps for the whole home. The full checklist above can be printed.
In what order is the Lakshmi Puja done?
Achman and sankalp, the kalash, Ganesh puja, then Lakshmi's sixteen offerings with her mantra, Kuber and the ledger, the Saraswati tilak on the tools of work, a text (Chalisa, Kanakadhara or Shri Suktam), the aartis of Ganesh and Lakshmi, the lamps carried out to every corner of the home, and prasad.
Which mantra is chanted on Diwali?
Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Kamale Kamalalaye Praseed Praseed Shreem Hreem Shreem Om Mahalakshmyai Namah, 11 or 108 times; or the short Om Mahalakshmyai Namah. Ganesh is invoked first with Om Gam Ganapataye Namah.
Why is Lakshmi worshipped on a new moon night?
The Diwali Amavasya falls with the Sun and Moon in Tula (Libra), Venus's sign, and Venus is Lakshmi's graha; the fixed Vrishabha lagna that rises after sunset is also Venus's sign. The lamps answer the darkest night of the year, and the ledgers of the old trading year close on it.
How do I keep prosperity through the year, not just on Diwali?
The texts give the same answer as the elders: the evening lamp, the Friday puja, the accounts kept current, a fixed share given away, no lending on the wrong days, and the main door kept clean and lit. The rashi-wise acts above add the graha of your Moon sign; a signed-in member sees pointers from their own kundli.
Can I do the puja after the muhurat has passed?
Yes. The pradosh window is the best time, the Vrishabha lagna the fixed one; after it, the Simha lagna after midnight is used by businesses and by those who keep the night awake. A puja done with care in any evening hour of Diwali is accepted; the muhurat is the preference, not a bar.
