Mars's house is counted from three points: the Lagna, the Moon and Venus. Houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12 give the dosha.

From two or three of them it is a full dosha; from one it is partial (anshik).

Cancellations (dosha bhanga): Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn (its own or exalted sign); the sign exemptions the texts give for each house; Jupiter joining or aspecting Mars; the Moon with Mars.

Mars in Leo or Aquarius softens it, in many texts.

The houses come from the Lagna, so the birth time matters: the Lagna changes about every two hours.

स्वदारपीडा विदेशपरःMars in the 7th: the spouse suffers, and the native is drawn to foreign lands.
पापार्ते पापयुतेन च स्वर्क्षे स्वदारहानिःMars in the 7th, afflicted by or joined with a malefic: harm to the spouse. The texts read the dosha as heavier with malefics and lighter with benefics — the root of the cancellations.
