    The birth time is turned into Universal Time with the time zone in force at your birthplace on that date.

    From the latitude and longitude of the birthplace, the Swiss Ephemeris gives the point of the zodiac rising in the east; the Lahiri ayanamsa makes it sidereal.

Why does the birth time matter so much?

The lagna changes about every two hours, and its degree moves about 1° every four minutes. A birth time off by a few minutes can change the degree, and near a change, the sign itself.

Is the ascendant the same as the rashi?

No. The rashi is the Moon's sign; the lagna is the rising sign. They are the same only when the Moon was rising at your birth.

What is the navamsa lagna?

The sign of the lagna's degree in the D9 (navamsa) chart, which is read for marriage and the inner strength of the chart.

Can I find my lagna without the birth time?

No. The lagna changes about every two hours, so it needs the birth time. Without it, use the Moon sign (it changes only every 2¼ days) or the naam rashi from your name.
