Sun Sign Calculatorसूर्य राशि — वैदिक और पाश्चात्य
Your Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in at your birth. Western horoscopes use the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. The two are now about 24° apart, so most people's Vedic Sun sign is one sign behind the Western. This calculator gives both, with the sankrantis of your birth year.

How the Sun sign is foundसूर्य राशि कैसे निकलती है
- 1
The Sun's position at your birth is computed from the Swiss Ephemeris.
- 2
The Western sign is read from that position as it is (tropical); the Vedic sign after taking off the Lahiri ayanamsa (sidereal).
- 3
The Sun spends about a month in each sign. Its entry into a sign is a sankranti — Makara Sankranti is its entry into Capricorn in mid-January.
- 4
The sankranti times are reckoned as Drik Panchang prints them, to the minute.
What the Sun sign is used forसूर्य राशि का उपयोग
- The Sun is the karaka of the soul, the father, authority and vitality; its sign colours these.
- The solar months of the Hindu calendar (used in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Bengal and Odisha) follow the Sun's signs.
- Sankrantis are festival days — Makara Sankranti, Mesha Sankranti (the solar new year) and the rest.
- For the daily rashifal, Vedic astrology uses the Moon sign, not the Sun sign.

Questions · प्रश्न
Why is my Vedic Sun sign different from my Western one?
The Western zodiac starts at the spring equinox; the Vedic one is fixed to the stars. Because of the precession of the equinoxes they are now about 24° apart, so the Vedic sign is usually one sign earlier.
