The Lingashtakam is eight shlokas in praise of the Shivalinga, followed by a one-shloka phalashruti. Each of the eight ends on the same refrain, 'tat pranamami sadashiva-lingam' (to that linga of Sadashiva I bow), and the rest of each shloka lists the linga's epithets: who worshipped it, what it is adorned with and what it takes away. Its author is not known and its source text is not certain; the Gita Press copy names no author. Some ascribe it to Adi Shankaracharya, but there is no firm basis for that.
Short, rhythmic and easy to learn by heart, it is one of the Shiva hymns most often sung in homes and temples. People read it on Mondays, on Pradosh, on Mahashivratri and through Sawan, and while offering water or bel leaves on a Shivalinga. This page gives the full text as printed in the Gita Press Shiv Stotra Ratnakar, a plain meaning under every shloka that explains each epithet, and, after sign-in, a free PDF of the whole text.

Phalashruti 9
Those who read this holy Lingashtakam in Shiva's presence (before a Shivalinga or in a Shiva temple) reach Shivaloka, Shiva's world, and rejoice together with Shiva.
Where the hymn comes from
No Purana or older work is known for certain to contain the Lingashtakam; it has come down through stotra collections and oral tradition. In the Gita Press Shiv Stotra Ratnakar it is stotra no. 41, headed simply 'Lingashtakam', with no author's name, and it closes only with 'iti lingashtakam sampurnam' (thus ends the Lingashtakam). That is why this page calls its author unknown.
The first shloka's mention of Brahma and Vishnu worshipping the linga recalls the well-known story of the Shiva Purana in which, as the two argued, an endless pillar of fire appeared whose beginning and end neither could find, and both then worshipped it. The word linga means a sign or mark: the Shivalinga is the emblem of the formless Shiva through which he is worshipped.
The hymn circulates in several slightly different versions; some read 'nirmala-bhashita', 'sarva-sugandha', 'ashta-daridra-vinashana' or 'parama-padam'. The text on this page follows the Gita Press print letter for letter, and every difference is recorded in the source note.
How to read it
Bathe, put on clean clothes, light a lamp before a Shivalinga or a picture of Shiva, and if you can, offer water, milk, bel leaves or flowers. The phalashruti speaks of reading it in Shiva's presence, so reading it before a Shivalinga or in a Shiva temple is held to be best; but it is also read at the home shrine.
Read all eight shlokas and the phalashruti in one sitting, with clear pronunciation. Many people sing it while pouring water over the linga, one offering of water for each shloka. At the end, chant Om Namah Shivaya.
Meaning and fruit
The Lingashtakam says one thing in eight ways: bow to that linga of Sadashiva which Brahma, Vishnu, the gods, the sages, the siddhas and the asuras all worship, which is adorned with fragrance, kumkum, sandal paste, lotus garlands and gems, and which takes away the sorrow of birth, accumulated sin and poverty. The sixth shloka sums up its spirit: this linga is worshipped with true feeling and devotion alone.
The phalashruti says that those who read it in Shiva's presence reach Shivaloka and rejoice with Shiva. By tradition it is read for peace of mind, to complete a Shiva puja, and as a regular reading on Mondays and through Sawan.

In Jyotish the worship of Shiva is prescribed for both the Moon and Saturn: the Moon sits on Shiva's head, and Saturn is held to be Shiva's devotee. When the Moon is debilitated (in Scorpio), waning or afflicted by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn in the kundli, during a Moon or Saturn mahadasha or antardasha, or during Saturn's sade sati or dhaiya, the traditional remedy is to pour water on a Shivalinga on Mondays and read the Lingashtakam. Where the Moon and Saturn stand in your kundli and which dasha is running can be seen by building your kundli on this site.
