The Shiv Panchakshar Stotram is a short Sanskrit hymn built on Shiva's five-syllable mantra, Namah Shivaya. Its five verses belong in turn to the syllables na, ma, shi, va and ya: each describes Shiva's form and deeds and ends by saluting him as that syllable, 'tasmai ... karaya namah shivaya'. A sixth verse gives the merit of reading it. The hymn is traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya; the Gita Press Stotra Ratnavali also calls it the work of Shankaracharya.
It is read most often while offering water and bilva leaves to the Shiva linga, in the Monday puja, on Pradosh and on Shivratri, because short as it is, it holds the whole five-syllable mantra. This page gives the text exactly as printed by Gita Press, a plain meaning under every verse that also explains the harder epithets, and, after sign-in, a free PDF of the whole text.

To that Shiva, who is the syllable 'ya', salutation.
पदVerse 6
पञ्चाक्षरमिदं पुण्यं यः पठेच्छिवसंनिधौ। शिवलोकमवाप्नोति शिवेन सह मोदते॥
(फलश्रुति:) जो इस पवित्र पञ्चाक्षर स्तोत्र को शिव के सान्निध्य में, जैसे शिवलिंग के सामने, पढ़ता है, वह शिवलोक को प्राप्त करता है और वहाँ शिव के साथ आनन्द पाता है।(The phalashruti, the merit of reading:) Whoever reads this holy five-syllable hymn in Shiva's presence, before a Shiva linga for instance, reaches Shiva's world and rejoices there with Shiva.
पञ्चाक्षर और यह स्तोत्रThe five syllables and the hymn
Namah Shivaya is called the panchakshara, the five-syllable mantra: na, mah, shi, va, ya. In the Shaiva tradition it is Shiva's root mantra, and the words 'namah shivaya cha' occur in the Shri Rudram of the Yajurveda. This hymn gives one verse to each of the five syllables, so reading it is held to be a remembrance of the whole mantra.
The first three lines of each verse are epithets of Shiva: the serpent necklace, the ash, the water of the Ganga, Nandi and the pramatha hosts, Gauri, the destruction of Daksha's sacrifice, the blue throat, the three eyes, the matted locks and the Pinaka bow. The fourth line always has the same shape, 'tasmai ... karaya namah shivaya', salutation to Shiva who is that syllable. Gita Press prints the syllable in quotation marks, as in ‘न’ काराय, and this page keeps that.
पाठ विधिHow to read it
After bathing and putting on clean clothes, light a lamp before a Shiva linga or a picture of Shiva. By tradition the hymn goes with the abhishek: at the end of each verse, saying Namah Shivaya, offer water, milk or a bilva leaf on the linga. That is why the phalashruti speaks of reading it 'shiva-sannidhau', in Shiva's presence.
Read all six verses in one sitting, slowly, following the meaning. Practise the Sanskrit clusters, such as bhasmangaragaya, kumbhodbhava and pathecchiva-sannidhau, slowly for the first few days. Chanting Om Namah Shivaya for a while after the hymn is held to be fitting.
महत्व और फलMeaning and fruit
The phalashruti states its own fruit: one who reads it before Shiva reaches Shiva's world and rejoices with him. Tradition treats it as a reading that calms and steadies the mind, since every verse comes back to the same mantra and its rhythm is simple.
It is held to be special on Mondays, on Pradosh, in the month of Shravan and on Mahashivratri. Children learn it quickly, so in many homes it is the first Sanskrit hymn they are taught.

Shiva is linked with the Moon and with Saturn: the Moon rests on his head, and Saturn is held to be his devotee. When the Moon is debilitated (in Scorpio), waning or afflicted by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn in the kundli, in times of mental unrest, in a Moon mahadasha or antardasha, and during Saturn's sade sati, dhaiya or a Saturn period, the usual advice is to offer water on the Shiva linga on Mondays and read the five-syllable mantra with this hymn. - शिव पंचाक्षर स्तोत्र कब और कितनी बार पढ़ना चाहिए?When, and how many times, should it be read?
- प्रतिदिन एक बार, प्रातः या संध्या की पूजा में, पर्याप्त है। सोमवार, प्रदोष, श्रावण और महाशिवरात्रि पर कई लोग इसे तीन, पाँच या ग्यारह बार पढ़ते हैं। कोई संख्या अनिवार्य नहीं है; नियमितता अधिक महत्व रखती है।Once a day, at the morning or evening puja, is enough. On Mondays, Pradosh, in Shravan and on Mahashivratri many read it three, five or eleven times. No number is binding; regularity matters more.
- शिव पंचाक्षर स्तोत्र पढ़ने के क्या लाभ हैं?What are the benefits of reading it?
- इसकी फलश्रुति कहती है कि शिव के सामने इसे पढ़ने वाला शिवलोक पाता है और शिव के साथ आनन्दित होता है। परम्परा में इसे मन की शान्ति और पञ्चाक्षर मन्त्र के स्मरण का सरल उपाय माना जाता है, और ज्योतिष में चन्द्र और शनि के उपाय के रूप में बताया जाता है।Its phalashruti says that one who reads it before Shiva reaches Shiva's world and rejoices with him. - पाँचवें श्लोक में 'यक्षस्वरूपाय' है या 'यज्ञस्वरूपाय'?Is it yaksha-svarupaya or yajna-svarupaya in the fifth verse?
Both readings are found. The Gita Press Hanuman Chalisa booklet prints 'य (क्ष) ज्ञस्वरूपाय', that is, the main reading yajna-svarupaya (the form of sacrifice) with yaksha-svarupaya (who took a yaksha's form) in brackets; the same publisher's Stotra Ratnavali prints only yaksha-svarupaya. This page keeps the booklet's bracketed reading; when reciting, say one of the two.
