The Bilvashtakam is eight shlokas for offering bilva (bel) leaves to Shiva, followed by a one-shloka phalashruti. Each of the eight ends on 'bilvapatram shivarpanam' (this bilva leaf is offered to Shiva). The first shloka links the three-leafed bilva to the three gunas, Shiva's three eyes and three weapons; the middle ones set the merit of this small offering beside great sacrifices and gifts; and the eighth sees Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in the root, middle and tip of the bilva. Its author is not known; the Gita Press copy names no author.
The bel leaf holds a very high place in Shiva puja, and people read this hymn while offering bel leaves on a Shivalinga, one leaf with each shloka, above all on Mondays, on Pradosh, on Mahashivratri and through Sawan. This page gives the full text as printed in the Gita Press Shiv Stotra Ratnakar, a plain meaning under every shloka, the traditional way of offering the leaf, and, after sign-in, a free PDF of the whole text.

Shloka 1
Three-leafed, shaped like the three gunas (sattva, rajas and tamas), like Shiva's three eyes and like a set of three weapons (trayayudha), destroying the sins of three births: this bilva leaf is offered to Shiva.
Shloka 2
With bilva leaves of three leaflets (trishakha), free of holes (achchhidra), tender and auspicious, I shall worship Shiva: this bilva leaf is offered to Shiva.
Shloka 3
When Nandikeshvara (Shiva, the lord of Nandi) is worshipped with an unbroken bilva leaf, those who worship are made pure of all their sins: this bilva leaf is offered to Shiva.
Shloka 4
To give, even once, a single Shalagrama stone (the black stone of the Gandaki river worshipped as Vishnu) to brahmins, and the great merit of a Soma sacrifice: the sense of the shloka is that a bilva leaf offered to Shiva carries that much merit.
Shloka 5
The gift of thousands of crores of elephants (danti, the tusked one), hundreds of Vajapeya sacrifices, and the great gift of a crore of daughters given in marriage (kanyadana): the sense of the shloka is that a bilva leaf offered to Shiva is worth all of these.
Shloka 6
Born from the breast of Lakshmi and dear to Mahadeva: this bilva tree I offer; this bilva leaf is offered to Shiva. Tradition links the bilva with Lakshmi, and one name of its fruit is shriphala.
Shloka 7
Seeing the bilva tree and touching it destroy sin; this bilva leaf, which does away even with aghora-papa, is offered to Shiva. Aghora (literally 'not fearsome') is a name of Shiva, so aghora-papa is taken as a sin against Shiva; many also read it as the most dreadful sin.
Shloka 8
To the One who is Brahma at the root, Vishnu in the middle and Shiva at the tip: this bilva leaf is offered to Shiva. The root, middle and tip are those of the bilva itself: by tradition Brahma dwells at its base, Vishnu in its middle and Shiva at its top, whether of the whole tree or of a single leaf.
Phalashruti 9
Those who read this holy Bilvashtakam in Shiva's presence (before a Shivalinga or in a Shiva temple) are freed from all sins and reach Shivaloka, Shiva's world.
Where the hymn comes from
The author of the Bilvashtakam is not known, and no Purana or older work is known for certain to contain it; it has come down through stotra collections and the practice of worship. In the Gita Press Shiv Stotra Ratnakar it is stotra no. 45, headed simply 'Bilvashtakam', with no author's name, and it closes only with 'iti bilvashtakam sampurnam' (thus ends the Bilvashtakam). Some ascribe it to Adi Shankaracharya, but there is no firm basis for that.
Its style is simple: the first three quarters of each shloka speak of the bel leaf, the bel tree or the merit of offering it, and the last quarter is the words of offering. The fourth and fifth shlokas list great works of merit, the gift of a Shalagrama stone, the Soma and Vajapeya sacrifices, gifts of elephants and kanyadana, to say that a single leaf offered to Shiva is worth as much.
The hymn circulates in several versions. Many have the refrain 'ekabilvam shivarpanam' (one bilva leaf offered to Shiva), some add a shloka on Kashi, Kalabhairava and Madhava of Prayag, and some longer forms run to eleven shlokas or more. The text on this page follows the Gita Press print, with eight shlokas and the phalashruti; every difference is recorded in the source note.
How bel leaves are offered
By tradition the bel leaf offered has three leaflets (tridala), as the first and second shlokas say. The leaf should be whole, not torn or holed, and not dry or withered. It is washed in clean water before it is offered.
By custom the leaf is offered with its smooth, glossy side towards the Shivalinga, so that the smooth side touches the linga. While offering, people say Om Namah Shivaya, or a shloka of the Bilvashtakam, each of which ends 'bilvapatram shivarpanam'. Offer as many leaves as come easily; a single leaf offered with devotion is held to be enough.
By tradition bel leaves are not plucked on the Chaturthi, Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdashi and Amavasya tithis, on the day of a Sankranti, or on Mondays; leaves for those days are picked a day earlier and kept. It is also held that a bel leaf does not go stale, so a leaf kept from before can be offered, and when no fresh leaf is to be had, even one already offered can be washed and offered again. When picking the leaves, branches are not broken and the tree is greeted with folded hands.
How to read it
Bathe, put on clean clothes, light a lamp before a Shivalinga and first offer water or milk. Then read the Bilvashtakam and, at the end of each shloka, as you say 'bilvapatram shivarpanam', offer one bel leaf; in this way eight leaves are offered over the eight shlokas.
At the end, read the phalashruti and chant Om Namah Shivaya. The hymn can be read even without bel leaves; then keep the feeling of offering in the mind at each shloka.
Meaning and fruit
The message of the Bilvashtakam is that pleasing Shiva needs feeling, not display: a clean, whole, three-leafed bel leaf offered with faith is worth as much as the great gifts and sacrifices the scriptures list. The leaf's three leaflets tie it to Shiva, who has three eyes, who is beyond the three gunas and whose weapon is the trident.
The phalashruti says that those who read it in Shiva's presence are freed from all sins and reach Shivaloka. By tradition it is read to complete a Shiva puja, as part of the Sawan and Monday observances, and in a spirit of inner cleansing and peace.

In your kundli
In Jyotish the worship of Shiva is prescribed for both the Moon and Saturn: the Moon sits on Shiva's head, and Saturn is held to be Shiva's devotee. When the Moon is debilitated (in Scorpio), waning or afflicted by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn in the kundli, or during a Moon mahadasha or antardasha, reading the Bilvashtakam while offering bel leaves on a Shivalinga on Mondays is given as a traditional remedy; during a Saturn dasha, sade sati or dhaiya, reading it on a Pradosh that falls on a Saturday (Shani Pradosh) is held to be special.
