The Shani Vajra Panjar Kavach (Shani Vajrapanjara Kavacham) is a short armour-hymn to Shani. Its colophon places it in the Brahmanda Purana, in a dialogue between Brahma and Narada, and within the text Brahma recites it to all the sages; its author is not known, and tradition assigns it to the Brahmanda Purana. Vajra-panjara means a cage of vajra, an enclosure that nothing can break: the kavach surrounds the reader on every side with Shani's names. Its twelve shlokas open with a meditation on Shani's form, then give one of his names for each part of the body from the forehead to the feet, and close with a phalashruti that names Shani in the twelfth, first, second, seventh and eighth places from the birth sign and says that Shani stays pleased with the one who reads this kavach.

That is why it is read above all during Shani's sade sati, his dhaiya and his mahadasha or antardasha, and especially on Saturdays. This page gives the full text as printed in the Nirnay Sagar Press Brihat Stotra Ratnakar (volume 2, the Navagraha stotras), a plain meaning under every shloka that also explains each of Shani's names, and, after sign-in, a free PDF of the whole text.

Dhyana 1

This is the dhyana verse, for picturing Shani before the reading: clad in blue (nilambara), blue in body (nilavapu), crowned (kiriti), seated on a vulture (gridhra), one who inspires dread (trasakara), holding a bow (dhanushman), four-armed, the son of the Sun, gracious of face. May he, calm (prashanta), always be a giver of boons to me.

Shloka 2

Brahma said: Listen, all you sages. This is the great and unsurpassed (anuttama) armour of Shani the king, Sauri, son of the Sun, which takes away the affliction caused by Shani (shani-pida).

Shloka 3

This armour is the dwelling of the deity (devatavasa) and is called the Vajrapanjara, a cage of vajra that nothing can pierce. 5.

May Vaivasvata (son of Vivasvan, the Sun) guard my nose, and Bhaskara always guard my mouth; Bhaskara (the giver of light) is usually a name of the Sun; every other name in this kavach is Shani's, so here it is taken for the Sun's son Shani. May Snigdhakantha (of the smooth, fair throat) guard my throat, and Mahabhuja (the mighty-armed) my two arms.

Shloka 6

May Shani guard my shoulders and Shubhaprada (giver of good) my hands. May Antaka (the ender) guard my thighs and Yama my two knees; Antaka and Yama are both used here as names of Shani.

Shloka 8

May Mandagati (of the slow gait) guard my feet and Pippala my whole body; Pippala is a name of Shani, who is traditionally worshipped at the pipal tree. May Suryanandana guard all my limbs, the greater and the lesser (anga and upanga).

Phalashruti 9

Here the phalashruti begins: whoever reads this divine armour of the Sun's son suffers no affliction, and Suryaja, the Sun-born Shani, is pleased with them.

Phalashruti 10

Whether Shani stands in the twelfth (vyaya), the first (janma) or the second place, which, counted from the birth sign, are the three phases of sade sati, or has gone to the eighth, the place of death (mrityu-sthana), or stands in the seventh, the place of the spouse (kalatra), he remains always well pleased with the one who reads this kavach.

Phalashruti 11

When the Sun's son is in the eighth, or in the twelfth, the first or the second, one who reads this kavach every day meets no affliction anywhere.

Phalashruti 12

This divine armour of Sauri (Shani), composed long ago, always destroys the faults that arise from his standing in the twelfth, the eighth and the birth place. The Lord (prabhu) destroys all the faults that lie in the birth lagna as well. With this the Shani Vajra Panjar Kavach is complete.

Where the kavach comes from

The Nirnay Sagar Press, Bombay edition of the Brihat Stotra Ratnakar has, in its second volume, a section of Navagraha stotras in which several hymns to Shani are printed together; this kavach is number 348 in the book's running count. Its colophon places it in the Brahmanda Purana, in a dialogue between Brahma and Narada. Within the text Brahma recites it to the sages, opening with 'Listen, all you sages'. No author is named anywhere.

The first shloka, Nilambaro Nilavapuh Kiriti, is a meditation on Shani in the upajati metre; the other eleven are in anushtup, and the last one has six quarters instead of four. Many modern booklets and websites add a viniyoga (seer Kashyapa, metre anushtup, deity Shanaishchara) and a rishyadi-nyasa before the text; the Nirnay Sagar print has neither, so they are not given here. Those whose tradition says a viniyoga can say it as their guru or priest teaches.

How to read it

On a Saturday, bathe, put on clean clothes and light a lamp of mustard or sesame oil before a picture of Shani or near a pipal tree. First read the dhyana verse and bring Shani's form to mind: blue garments, a blue body, a crown, the vulture as his mount, a bow and four arms. Then read the remaining shlokas in one sitting, with clear pronunciation; if the Sanskrit feels hard, read the meaning of each shloka first.

As each part of the body is named, rest your attention on it; that is how a kavach is read. During sade sati or dhaiya many people read it every day, as shloka 11 speaks of a daily reading, while others read it only on Saturdays. After the reading, chanting Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah and, where one can, giving black sesame, urad, oil or a blanket in charity are traditionally joined with the worship of Shani.

Meaning and fruit

The shape of the kavach is simple: after the meditation, each part of the body from head to foot is joined to one of Shani's names, and each name tells something about him: Suryanandana, Chhayatmaja, Yamanuja, Vaivasvata, Manda, Mandagati, Asita, Pippala. Together they hold his whole story: the son of the Sun and of Chhaya, the brother of Yama, slow of gait and dark of colour. The reader surrounds the body with these names, and that is why the kavach is called a cage of vajra.

The phalashruti (shlokas 9 to 12) sets this kavach apart, because it speaks directly of transits: even with Shani in the twelfth, first and second places from the birth sign (sade sati), or in the seventh or the eighth, Shani stays pleased with the one who reads it, and the faults of the birth lagna are eased as well. These are the statements of tradition, not a promise of any result. Shani is held to be the graha of karma and justice; patience, hard work, honesty and service, kept alongside the reading, are what tradition counts as truly pleasing him.

This kavach is a remedy for Saturn, and its phalashruti itself says when: Saturn's transit of the twelfth, first and second houses from the birth sign (the Moon sign), that is, sade sati, and Saturn in the seventh and the eighth. In Jyotish it is also prescribed for dhaiya (Saturn's two-and-a-half-year transit of the fourth or eighth house from the Moon sign) and kantaka Shani (Saturn in the angular houses from the Moon sign), during a Saturn mahadasha or antardasha, and when Saturn in the kundli sits with or aspects the lagna or the Moon, or is debilitated (in Aries). This is a traditional remedy, not a promise of results; Saturn's periods are also held to be a time for patience and steady effort. During sade sati, dhaiya or a Saturn mahadasha or antardasha it is read every day; shloka 11 of the kavach itself speaks of a daily reading. It is also given special weight on Shani Jayanti and on an Amavasya that falls on a Saturday.
How many times should the Shani Vajra Panjar Kavach be read?
One reading is enough. According to the phalashruti, one who reads it is not afflicted by Shani, Shani stays pleased even through sade sati and in the seventh and eighth places, and the faults of the birth lagna are eased; shloka 3 also calls it a giver of all good fortune. These are statements of tradition; what most readers find is patience and steadiness of mind.
What are the rules for the reading, and is a viniyoga needed?
Bathe, sit on a mat in a clean place, light a lamp, begin with the dhyana verse and read the whole text in one sitting. The Nirnay Sagar print has no viniyoga or nyasa and opens directly with the dhyana verse; some booklets add a viniyoga naming the sage Kashyapa, which can be said according to one's own tradition.
