Saturday belongs to Shani Dev. Shani is called the god of justice: he gives every being the fruit of its own karma, neither less nor more. That is why people fear him and worship him both. The Saturday fast is kept for sade sati, dhaiya, the Saturn mahadasha, illness, debt, court cases and trouble in one's job. Shani Dev is stern, but he also holds up whoever comes to him in faith.

The colour of Saturn is black and his metal is iron, so mustard oil, black sesame, black cloth, urad dal and gifts of iron matter in this vrat. Hanuman is worshipped on Saturdays too, because Shani is believed not to trouble a devotee of Hanuman. The story below tells how even King Vikramaditya had to pass through Shani's sade sati, and how in the end he won Shani's grace.

The story

Once a quarrel broke out among the nine grahas over which of them was the greatest. Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu each claimed the first place. When they could not settle it, they went to the gods and the sages. The sages said, 'This is not for us to decide. On earth, King Vikramaditya of Ujjain is just and wise. Go to him.'

The nine grahas came to Vikramaditya's court. The king thought: if I call one of them the greatest, the rest will be offended. So he found a way. He had nine thrones made of nine metals, gold, silver, bronze, copper, lead, tin, zinc, mica and iron, and set them out in that order. Then he said to the grahas, 'Each of you, take your seat.' The Sun sat on the gold throne, the Moon on silver, and so on down the line, until Shani was left with the iron throne, the last of all. Shani Dev understood that the king had placed him lowest. He said in anger, 'King, you have insulted me. You do not know my power. Whoever I look upon for seven and a half years, I turn their whole life upside down. You too will have to see this.' With that, Shani left.

Some time later Shani's sade sati began for King Vikramaditya. One day a horse trader came to Ujjain; it was Shani Dev himself, in disguise. He had a horse of extraordinary beauty. The king saw it and wished to ride. The moment he mounted, the horse ran like the wind, carried him into a dense forest and vanished. The king was left alone, hungry and thirsty, lost among the trees.

Wandering on, the king reached a town. There a merchant, seeing how worn out he was, gave him food. Impressed by the stranger's bearing and speech, the merchant took him home. That day the merchant's shop sold more than it ever had, so he took his guest for a lucky omen and gave him a room. On the wall of that room hung a peg carved in the shape of a swan, and on it hung the merchant's wife's precious necklace. In the night the king saw it with his own eyes: the swan on the peg slowly swallowed the necklace.

In the morning the necklace was gone. The merchant accused the king of theft. The king told the truth, 'The peg swallowed it,' but who would believe that? He was brought before the ruler of that town, who pronounced the sentence for theft: hands and feet to be cut off. Vikramaditya's hands and feet were cut off and he was left outside the town. A king one day, a crippled beggar the next. This was Shani's gaze.

An oil-presser saw him in that state and, out of pity, took him home. He would seat him by the oil mill, and Vikramaditya would call out to drive the bullocks round. So the years passed. Vikramaditya knew music. One night in the rainy season, sitting by the mill, he sang Raga Deepak. Such power was in his voice that the lamps across the whole town lit by themselves.

The princess of that town saw the wonder from her palace and heard the voice. She had enquiries made and learned that the singer was a crippled man living at the oil-presser's house. The princess made up her mind: 'I will marry him and no one else.' The king and queen pleaded with her, but she would not yield. In the end she was married to Vikramaditya.

One night after the wedding, Shani Dev appeared to Vikramaditya in a dream. The king folded his hands and said, 'Lord, I was wrong. I thought your power small. Forgive me, and do not give to anyone else the suffering I have had.' Shani Dev was pleased. 'King,' he said, 'the seven and a half years are complete. You did not lose patience and you blamed no one. I return your hands and feet.' In the morning the king woke to find his limbs whole again. The day was a Saturday.

That same day, in the merchant's house, the swan peg brought the necklace back up. The merchant realised he had had an innocent man punished. He came running, fell at the king's feet, begged forgiveness and gave him his daughter in marriage too. The ruler of the town folded his hands as well. Vikramaditya returned to Ujjain with both queens and with honour. He had it proclaimed throughout his kingdom: 'Shani Dev is the greatest of all the grahas. Let his fast and worship be kept every Saturday, let oil be offered to him, and let this story be heard.' It is said that whoever keeps the Saturday fast with faith and hears this katha has the hardship of sade sati and dhaiya made lighter by Shani Dev.

How to keep the fast

On Saturday, rise before sunrise, bathe and wear black or dark blue. Take the sankalp, the vow. If sade sati or dhaiya is running, mention it in the vow and pray to Shani Dev to lighten the hardship.

Go to a Shani temple, or keep an iron image or a picture of Shani Dev at home. Offer mustard oil to Shani Dev; this is the chief offering. Offer black sesame, black urad, black cloth, blue or dark flowers and some object of iron. Light a lamp of mustard oil.

Pour water at the root of a peepal tree and walk around it seven times; in the evening light a mustard-oil lamp under it. This is an old Saturday rule.

Chant 'Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah' for one mala (108 times). Recite the Shani Chalisa. On Saturday also recite the Hanuman Chalisa without fail and offer oil and sindoor to Hanuman; folk belief holds that Shani does not trouble a devotee of Hanuman.

Keep the fast through the day with water, fruit and milk. After sunset, do the katha and aarti and eat one meal. By tradition the Saturday meal has black urad dal or khichdi, and til with jaggery. Most homes allow salt.

Giving has special weight on Saturday: mustard oil, black sesame, urad, a black blanket or cloth, iron, shoes, and food for the needy, labourers or the disabled. Feeding crows and black dogs is also held dear to Shani. In the story it was an oil-presser who sheltered the crippled king; service is the true worship of Shani.

Buying iron, oil, black sesame, salt and shoes is avoided on Saturdays; so are new beginnings and long journeys eastward. These are folk rules.

How many weeks: a vow of 19 Saturdays is common; during sade sati many keep every Saturday for the whole period. The vrat can begin on any Saturday; starting in the month of Shravan or on Shani Jayanti is considered auspicious.

On the day, no lies, no deceit, and no humiliating anyone weaker than you. Shani is the god of justice: he looks at deeds, not display.

Udyapan (completing the vrat)

When the 19 Saturdays, or the number vowed, are complete, perform the udyapan on the next Saturday. That day bathe Shani Dev's image with oil at the temple, recite the Shani Chalisa and Hanuman Chalisa, and if you can, have a havan performed with Shani's seed mantra. Light a lamp under the peepal tree.

On the day of udyapan feed the needy, labourers or disabled people and give gifts: a black blanket, black cloth, mustard oil, black sesame, urad, an iron vessel and dakshina. Giving a meal at an old-age home or a service ashram is excellent too. Shani is pleased by labour and service, not display.

The fast may continue after the udyapan. If sade sati is running, it is thought good to keep the oil offering and the Hanuman Chalisa every Saturday for the whole period.

What the fast gives

By tradition the Saturday fast eases the hardship of sade sati and dhaiya, brings relief from illness, debt and lawsuits, and gives stability in work and business. The message of the story is that no one escapes Shani's trials, not even a king, but whoever keeps patience and blames no one has everything returned by Shani in the end.

Saturn is the planet of karma, labour, discipline and longevity. This fast makes a person humble and hard-working, which is the true remedy for Saturn. Those facing instability in their job, long illness, trouble in the joints or bones, loneliness, or disputes with workers and servants are said to gain the most from the Saturday fast and from service and giving.

आरतीAarti

The katha ends with the Shani aarti 'Jai Jai Shri Shanidev', and in most homes the Hanuman aarti follows it. After the aarti, share the til-gur prasad. The full Hanuman Chalisa, with its meaning, is in this collection; the Shani Chalisa is being added.

In your kundli

Saturday is ruled by Saturn, which in the kundli stands for karma, longevity, labour, servants, illness and delay. The Saturday fast is advised when Saturn is debilitated (in Aries), afflicted by malefics, when the Saturn mahadasha or antardasha is running, or when transiting Saturn is in the twelfth, first or second house from your Moon (sade sati) or in the fourth or eighth (dhaiya). You can build your kundli on this site and check your Saturn's condition, its dasha, and the dates of your own sade sati and dhaiya.

How many Saturdays should the fast be kept? And during sade sati?
The usual vow is 19 Saturdays, followed by the udyapan. During sade sati (about seven and a half years) or dhaiya (about two and a half years), many keep the oil offering and the Hanuman Chalisa every Saturday for the whole period, even without a full fast. The vrat can begin on any Saturday.
What should one eat on the Saturday fast, and what not?
Water, fruit and milk during the day. मासिक धर्म में क्या करें?Can women keep the Shani fast? What about during periods?
Yes, women keep the Saturday fast. In some regions women do not touch Shani's image or pour the oil themselves, and instead take darshan from a distance, give the gifts and recite the Hanuman Chalisa; that is local custom, not a strict rule of scripture. During periods the fast and silent chanting can continue; let another member of the household do the puja. The count is not broken.
