The Shani Chalisa is the popular forty-verse hymn to Shani Dev, Saturn, with two dohas at the start and one at the end. Tradition names no author; in the fortieth chaupai the composer calls himself the Lord's servant Ram Sundar, and in the closing doha simply a devotee. The Chalisa describes Shani's form, his ten names, his seven mounts and his four feet, and tells how his dasha fell on Rama, on King Vikramaditya, on Harishchandra, on Nala, on the Pandavas and on Shiva and Parvati themselves. People read it on Saturdays, through sade sati and dhaiya, and during a Saturn dasha.

The text below follows a printed booklet from Pradip Publications, Jalandhar, checked against an online reading. Under every doha and chaupai is a plain meaning in Hindi and English, so the stories and the names make sense as you recite. 43.

This recitation of Lord Shanishchar a devotee has prepared. Whoever reads it for forty days crosses the ocean of worldly existence.

How to read it

Saturday is the day for the Shani Chalisa. After bathing, light a lamp of mustard oil before an image of Shani Dev or under a peepal tree, offer black sesame or black urad and blue flowers, and begin with the opening doha to Ganesha. Read seated, with a calm mind and clear pronunciation; a chaupai read slowly is worth more than one read in a hurry.

The closing doha promises the fruit of forty days' continuous reading, so many people begin on a Saturday and take a vow of forty days. During sade sati or dhaiya a vow of seven, eleven or twenty-one Saturdays is also common. Those who cannot read daily read on Saturdays only, but without breaking the chain.

After the recitation come Shani's aarti, the japa of 'Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah', and a gift according to one's means: oil, black cloth, iron, black urad. The custom of not looking straight into the eyes of Shani's image, and of offering water to the peepal, is itself written into the thirty-ninth chaupai.

Meaning and fruit

Shani is called the god of justice: he gives the fruit of one's deeds, no more and no less. The Chalisa teaches this through stories. Even righteous kings such as Rama, Harishchandra, Nala and Vikramaditya passed through Shani's dasha, and came out of it with greater fame than before. The message is not to fear Shani but to win him over with humility, as Vikramaditya did by singing Raga Deepak.

The thirty-sixth and thirty-seventh chaupais state the fruit plainly: whoever sings this account daily is never tormented by an evil dasha, and the enemy's strength goes slack. Tradition holds that its recitation lightens the troubles of sade sati and dhaiya, clears obstacles in work and trade, reduces illness and fear, and brings patience to the mind.

Chaupais twenty-seven to thirty-six list Shani's seven mounts and four feet. In popular astrology the mount and the foot on which Shani enters a new sign decide the fruit of that transit: the elephant and the golden foot are auspicious, the donkey, the deer, the dog and the iron foot bring hardship. Panchangs print this reckoning alongside every change of sign by Shani.

The stories in the Chalisa

From the tenth to the twenty-sixth chaupai the Chalisa runs through one story after another, and knowing them opens the text. Rama was exiled on the day of his coronation, Sita was abducted, Lakshmana fell to the shakti weapon, but in the end Lanka burned and Hanuman's drum sounded. When Shani's dasha came on King Vikramaditya, a painted peacock swallowed his nine-lakh necklace, he was charged with theft, his hands and feet were cut off, and he had to turn an oilman's press; when he pleaded in Raga Deepak, Shani relented.

Truthful Harishchandra sold his wife and carried water for the Dom of the cremation ground. For King Nala even a roasted fish leapt back into the water. Sati gave up her body at Daksha's sacrifice, and at Shani's glance the child Ganesha's head flew off. In the Pandavas' exile Draupadi was dragged to be stripped, and the Kauravas lost their senses, which brought on the Mahabharata war.

In the story of the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth chaupais Shani's dasha fell on the Sun. Hanuman put the Sun in his mouth and leapt towards the netherworld; Shesha, seeing the gods in distress, pleaded, and the Sun was released. From these stories grew the folk belief that Shani's wrath does not touch one who is under Hanuman's protection, which is why the Hanuman Chalisa is so often read alongside the Shani Chalisa.

In your kundli

In Jyotish the Shani Chalisa is the most common recitation for pacifying Saturn. When transiting Saturn sits in the twelfth, first or second house from the Moon sign, sade sati is running; in the fourth or eighth, it is dhaiya. Regular recitation is prescribed in both, and during a Saturn mahadasha or antardasha. It is also the remedy when Saturn in the birth chart occupies the first, fourth, seventh, eighth, tenth or twelfth house, is debilitated or combust, or sits with the Moon in a Shani-Chandra yoga (vish yoga). Saturday is Shani's day, so a Saturday reading is held to be the most fruitful. It is also read daily on Shani Jayanti, on a Shani Amavasya, and through sade sati or dhaiya.
How many times should the Shani Chalisa be recited?
By the closing doha, one recitation a day for forty days in a row gives the full fruit. Many take a vow of seven, eleven or twenty-one Saturdays during sade sati; a single reading with faith also counts.
What are the benefits of reading the Shani Chalisa?
The Chalisa itself says that an evil dasha never torments the one who sings it daily and that the enemy's strength goes slack. Tradition reads it to soften the hardships of sade sati, dhaiya and a Saturn dasha, to clear obstacles at work, and to bring patience to the mind.
What rules should be kept while reading the Shani Chalisa?
Read after bathing, in clean clothes, with a mustard-oil lamp lit and black sesame or black urad offered. Offering oil at a Shani temple and water to the peepal on Saturday is written into the Chalisa itself. Do not get up in the middle of the recitation, and do not break a vow of days once taken.
