Bhairav is the fierce form of Shiva: the Kotwal, the guardian-keeper of Kashi, lord of ghosts and spirits, riding a dog, with trident, damaru, skull-bowl and sword in his hands. The Bhairav Chalisa is his hymn of praise: one opening doha, thirty-seven chaupais and a closing doha. The text names no author; it is a traditional composition handed down through temple booklets and the mouths of devotees. People read it for protection from fear, from enemies, from unseen afflictions and from the troubles of Rahu and Saturn, and it is recited with special care on Kalashtami and Bhairav Ashtami.
The text here follows the booklet Shri Bhairav Chalisa and Other Stotras of the Shri Batuk Bhairav Mandir, Nehru Place, New Delhi, and has been checked against the Drik Panchang text. The same booklet goes on to print a Shri Batuk Bhairav Chalisa, which is a different composition and is not on this page. Under each chaupai is a plain meaning, so the sense of the words travels with the recitation. After signing in you can download the same text as a PDF, for printing or for sending to family.

How to read it
Bhairav is usually worshipped in the evening or at night, since he is held to be a deity of the night. Bathe, take your seat, light a lamp of mustard oil before the picture or image of Bhairav, remember Ganesha and Shiva first, and then recite the Chalisa.
Bhairav is said to be fond of urad dal, black sesame, mustard oil, coconut, imarti or jalebi, and dark blue or black flowers. After the recitation the aarti of Bhairav is done, and it is customary to feed part of the prasad to a dog, since the dog is Bhairav's mount.
The recitation is done with a calm mind, without hurry, in one sitting. In regular practice people recite it daily for twenty-one or forty-one days; in trouble, seven or eleven times in a single sitting.
Meaning and fruit
The Chalisa is a portrait of Bhairav: dark and blood-red in colour, with wide red eyes, the moon on his matted locks, bells on his girdle, the dog as his mount, and trident, damaru, skull-bowl and sword in his hands. The middle chaupais count his names, Batuk, Kaal, Chakranath, Nakulesh, Krodhesh, Ashvanath, Pretanath, Bhutanath, and say that past, future and present are all his forms.
The closing chaupais are prayer: to be carried across the ocean of existence, to have one's offences forgiven, to be given devotion, and the promise that no trouble falls where Bhairav's servant is. This is why it is read for protection from fear, bad dreams, enemies, unseen afflictions and unexplained loss.
Bhairav is the Kotwal of Kashi, so tradition also makes him the deity of justice and punishment: whoever takes refuge in him sincerely is protected, and whoever torments others has cause to fear. The thirteenth and thirty-third chaupais of the Chalisa say both sides of this.
The eight Bhairavs and the Kotwal of Kashi
The fifth chaupai, which says all sing of your eight forms, points to the eight Bhairavs: Asitanga, Ruru, Chanda, Krodha, Unmatta, Kapali, Bhishana and Samhara Bhairav, held to be the guardians of the eight directions. Kaal Bhairav is lord of them all, and Batuk Bhairav is his gentle child form; the fourth chaupai hails both.
The Kashi story is that Bhairav sprang from Shiva's anger at Brahma's pride and cut off Brahma's fifth head. He was freed of the sin of killing a Brahmin in Kashi, and Shiva made him the Kotwal of Kashi, the city's guardian and magistrate. This is why a pilgrimage to Kashi is held to be incomplete without a darshan of Kaal Bhairav.

In Jyotish Bhairav is the deity who pacifies both Rahu and Saturn. The Bhairav Chalisa is prescribed when Rahu sits in the first, seventh or eighth house of the kundli, in a Rahu mahadasha or antardasha, in a Kaal Sarp yoga, and during Saturn's sade sati or dhaiya. For questions of unexplained fear, bad dreams, enemies and unseen afflictions, tradition likewise sends one to Bhairav.
