The Kali Chalisa is a Hindi hymn of forty chaupais to Mother Kali, with one doha at the start and another at the close. Its author is not known; it belongs to the tradition of chalisa booklets printed across north India. It describes Kali's eight-armed form and her weapons, the slaying of Mahishasura and of Shumbha and Nishumbha, and the story of her tongue coming out when her foot fell on Shiva.

People read it on Kali Puja and Diwali night, during Navratri, on Amavasya, and on Saturdays or Tuesdays, for protection from fear, enemies and planetary affliction. The full text on this page is taken from the printed booklet, every verse carries a plain meaning beneath it, and the whole text can be downloaded as a free PDF after signing in.

How to read it

Bathe, put on clean clothes and place a picture or image of Mother Kali before you. Light a lamp of ghee or mustard oil, offer incense, red flowers or hibiscus, sindoor and a sweet, and if you wish repeat one of the Mother's bija mantras before beginning with the opening doha.

Read with a calm mind and clear pronunciation, without hurrying. Keeping the sense of each chaupai in mind as you go turns recitation into devotion; that is why the meaning is given under every verse. Close with the final doha, bow to the Mother and share the prasad.

The Kali Chalisa is read in a sattvik spirit, never with a wish for anyone's harm. No special initiation or tantric procedure is needed to read it at home.

Meaning and fruit

Kali is the fiercest form of Durga: mistress even of Kala, time and death, hence her name. The Chalisa describes her eight arms and their weapons, the garland of heads, and the tongue that came out when her foot fell on Shiva. That ferocity is not turned on the devotee but on the devotee's fears and enemies; for the devotee she is Kalyani, the bringer of welfare, and the giver of fearlessness.

Tradition prescribes the text for protection from fear, bad dreams, enemies, unseen afflictions and sudden trouble. The last chaupais and the closing doha state its fruit themselves: the suffering of those who remember her in trouble is taken away, and those who read with love have their wishes fulfilled.

In Bengal and eastern India, Kali Puja is held on the night of the Kartik Amavasya, which is Diwali night in the north. That night, and the seventh night of Navratri, Kalaratri, are held to be the special occasions for this Chalisa.

Kali's form in the Chalisa

Chaupais 3 to 7 count the Mother's eight hands: an enemy's severed head, a cup of wine, a spear, the skull-bowl, a sword, the trident, a blade and the eighth hand raised in blessing. The garland of heads and the crown on her broad forehead complete the picture. It is the form seen in booklet pictures and in the images of Kali Puja.

Chaupais 23 to 28 carry two stories. First, her help to Rama in the Treta age against Ravana's army; second, the dark fury after battle in which she forgot friend from stranger, Shiva lying in her path as a child, and her tongue coming out the moment her foot fell on him. The Chalisa itself says this is the form by which she is known.

Chaupais 29 to 32 tell of the slaying of Mahishasura and of Shumbha and Nishumbha, which comes from the Durga Saptashati; here Kali and Durga are two names of one Shakti, and chaupai 9 says it outright: you alone are Kali, you alone are Sita.
