The Durga Chalisa is a hymn of praise to Mother Durga whose last verse names its composer as Devidas, about whom nothing more is known. It describes the Mother's form, her shrines, her slaying of Mahishasura and of Shumbha and Nishumbha, the story of Shankaracharya, and ends with the devotee's own prayer. It is read in homes through the nine days of Navratri, on Fridays and Tuesdays, and on Ashtami.

The text below follows the Gita Press, Gorakhpur booklet, keeping its Awadhi-Braj spellings (sakti, bisala, Lachhami) exactly as printed. Under each verse is a plain meaning, with a word on the goddess's names and the shrines the verse mentions. After signing in you can download the whole text as a PDF, to print or to send to family.

How to read it

Bathe, put on clean clothes, and place a picture or image of Mother Durga at the place of worship. Red cloth, red flowers, roli and rice grains are held dear to the Mother. Light a ghee lamp and incense, bow to the Mother first, then sit on an asan and begin.

Read slowly, pronouncing every word clearly; keeping the meaning of each verse alongside stops the mind from wandering. When the reading is done, perform the aarti Jai Ambe Gauri and offer fruit, sweets or halwa as prasad.

One reading a day is enough for daily practice. In Navratri many homes read it every day for the nine days and close the observance with kanya puja on Ashtami or Navami.

Meaning and fruit

The Durga Chalisa calls on the Mother in all her forms: Annapurna, Sarasvati, Lakshmi, Kali, the ten Mahavidyas, and the goddess of the shrines at Hinglaj, Nagarkot and Jwalamukhi. Reading it is therefore held to be worship of many forms of the goddess at once.

The Chalisa states its own fruit: sorrow and poverty do not come near one who reads it with love and devotion; one who meditates with a steady mind is freed from birth and death; and the reader enjoys every happiness and reaches the highest state. Devotees also read it for protection from fear, from enemies and from illness.

The story of Shankaracharya (verses 30 to 34) is the heart of the text: knowledge and austerity alone are not enough, and without the grace of Shakti even yoga does not succeed. That is the spirit of the whole reading, to call on the Mother as one who has taken refuge in her.

Reading it in Navratri

The Durga Chalisa is read most of all in the two Navratris, in Chaitra and in the autumn. After the kalash is established it is read in the morning or evening puja for all nine days, and those who recite the Durga Saptashati or a mantra of the goddess add it to that.

Those who keep the Navratri fast take their fruit meal only after the reading. On Ashtami and Navami the Chalisa is read along with kanya puja and the havan, and the fast is then broken.
