The Vindhyeshwari Chalisa is an Awadhi-Hindi hymn to Vindhyavasini, the presiding Devi of Vindhyachal: one opening doha and thirty-eight chaupais. Its composer is not known; it has come down through popular tradition. It is sung every day at the Vindhyachal shaktipeeth on the Ganga near Mirzapur, and Devi devotees across the country read it during Navratri. The Chalisa calls the Devi the primal Shakti, remembers her many forms (Vaishnavi, Rudrani, Sharada, Kali, Hinglaj, Shitala, the sixty-four yoginis), and then tells what the recitation does for debt, disease, bondage, trouble and childlessness.

The text below is transcribed letter for letter from the printed Gita Press, Gorakhpur booklet Shri Durga Chalisa, keeping the Awadhi spellings as printed (Bindhyachal, sakti, Baisnavi). Under each verse is a plain meaning, so the sense of the words travels with the recitation. After signing in you can download the whole text as a PDF, print it, or send it to family.

How to read it

After bathing in the morning, light a lamp before the Devi's picture or image and sit on a red asana to recite. Begin with the doha to greet the Devi, then read the thirty-eight chaupais in order. After the recitation, offer red flowers, a coconut or sweets.

The Chalisa itself prescribes a hundred recitations for debt and a thousand for bondage. On ordinary days one reading is enough; during the nine days of Navratri the custom is one or three readings a day. Those who can visit Vindhyachal also recite it in the temple there.

Pronounce the words clearly and do not hurry. If you read the meaning alongside, the recitation stops being mere words and becomes a prayer.

Meaning and fruit

Vindhyachal is the land of three goddesses, Vindhyavasini, Ashtabhuja and Kali Khoh, visited together as the Trikona parikrama. Tradition holds that Vindhyavasini is the Devi who slipped from Kansa's hands, rose into the sky to warn him, and then made her home in the Vindhya hills. That is why the Chalisa calls her the primal Shakti.

The second half of the Chalisa is its phalashruti, the statement of fruit: release from debt, the end of disease, freedom from bondage, protection in trouble, and the gift of a child. These fruits are promised on the condition of devotion and regularity, which is why the text keeps returning to reading 'with the mind on it' and 'with love'.

The many names of the Devi in the hymn (Vaishnavi, Rudrani, Sharada, Brahmani, Hinglaj, Shitala, the sixty-four yoginis, Bhadrakali) teach that the goddesses of the different seats are forms of one Shakti. The Chalisa therefore serves the devotee of any shaktipeeth.

When to read

The nine days of Navratri are its main season; Friday is the Devi's day, so a Friday reading is held to be special. Read it in the morning after bathing or in the evening with a lamp lit. Pilgrims to Vindhyachal recite it in the temple there.

In Jyotish the worship of Vindhyavasini and the other forms of Durga is tied to the pacification of Mars and Rahu. When Mars is debilitated, combust or afflicted in the sixth or eighth house, in mangal dosha, during a Rahu mahadasha or antardasha, or when Rahu sits with the Moon (grahan yoga), regular recitation of this Chalisa, especially through Navratri, is the usual remedy. Questions people ask

When should the Vindhyeshwari Chalisa be read?
On any day. The nine days of Navratri and Fridays are held to be special. The best time is the morning after bathing; it can also be read in the evening with a lamp lit.
How many times should it be recited?
For a daily practice once is enough. विन्ध्येश्वरी चालीसा पढ़ने के क्या लाभ हैं?What are the benefits of reading it?
According to the Chalisa its recitation removes debt, disease, bondage and trouble, grants the happiness of children, and makes even a pauper prosperous. In Jyotish it is counted as a remedy for Mars and Rahu.
Why does this Chalisa have thirty-eight chaupais instead of forty?
Both the printed Gita Press text and the versions in common use have one doha and thirty-eight chaupais. 'Chalisa' is the customary name of the hymn here, not a count. We have kept the text as printed, adding or dropping nothing.
