The Shrimad Bhagavad Gita is part of the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata. On the battlefield of Kurukshetra, when Arjuna turns away from the fight, the teaching that Shri Krishna gives him is the Gita. The full Gita has 18 chapters and 700 verses. The paths of action, knowledge and devotion run through it side by side, which is why it is among the most read and most commented-on texts of India.
This page is not the whole Gita. It is our own selection of 85 verses, with at least one from each of the eighteen chapters: the verses most often quoted, taught and learnt by heart. Every verse carries its chapter and verse number (2.47, for example), so that you can find it at the same place in any complete Gita. Under the verse is its plain meaning in Hindi and English. After sign-in, the whole selection can be downloaded as a free PDF.
The text of the verses was transcribed letter by letter from the page images of the Gita Press, Gorakhpur mool (Sanskrit-only) Gita, 13th edition, samvat 2010, then compared by machine against a second typed text (Sanskrit Wikisource), and read again by an independent reviewer. The meanings are in our own words; they are not a translation of any published commentary.

Dhritarashtra asks Sanjaya what his own sons and the sons of Pandu did when they gathered, eager for battle, on the field of dharma at Kurukshetra.

Arjuna says that weakness of heart has overpowered his nature and his mind is confused about what is right. He asks Krishna to tell him plainly what is truly good for him: I am your disciple, I have come to you for refuge, teach me.

Krishna says that Arjuna is grieving for those who deserve no grief, and yet speaking words of wisdom. Those who know do not mourn either the dead or the living.

Just as the one who dwells in the body passes through childhood, youth and old age in this body, so too it takes on another body. A steady person is not shaken by this.

Krishna says that it is the contact of the senses with their objects that brings cold and heat, pleasure and pain. These come and go and do not last, so Arjuna should bear them.
Gita 2.20 · Sankhya Yoga
The self is never born and never dies, nor is it something that once came to be and will one day cease to be. It is unborn, eternal, everlasting and ancient. It is not killed when the body is killed.
Gita 2.22 · Sankhya Yoga
As a person casts off worn-out clothes and puts on new ones, so the one who dwells in the body leaves worn-out bodies and enters new ones.
Gita 2.23 · Sankhya Yoga
Weapons cannot cut this self, fire cannot burn it, water cannot wet it and wind cannot dry it.
Gita 2.27 · Sankhya Yoga
For one who is born, death is certain, and for one who has died, birth is certain. So Arjuna should not grieve over what cannot be avoided.
Gita 2.38 · Sankhya Yoga
Hold pleasure and pain, gain and loss, victory and defeat as equal, and then make ready for battle. Fighting in this way, Arjuna will incur no sin.
Gita 2.40 · Sankhya Yoga
On this path no effort once begun is lost, and nothing goes wrong by it. Even a little of this dharma protects one from great fear.
Gita 2.47 · Sankhya Yoga
Your right is to the action alone, never to its fruits. Do not make the fruit of action your motive, and do not be attached to not acting either.
Gita 2.48 · Sankhya Yoga
Krishna tells Arjuna (Dhananjaya) to act while established in yoga, giving up attachment and staying the same in success and failure. This evenness of mind is called yoga.
Gita 2.50 · Sankhya Yoga
One whose understanding is settled in this evenness leaves behind both good and bad deeds here itself. So devote yourself to yoga; skill in action is yoga.
Gita 2.62 · Sankhya Yoga
When a person keeps dwelling on sense objects, attachment to them grows. From attachment comes desire, and from desire comes anger.
Gita 2.63 · Sankhya Yoga
Anger leads to confusion, confusion to loss of memory, loss of memory to the ruin of understanding, and when understanding is ruined the person is lost.
Gita 2.70 · Sankhya Yoga
As the waters of rivers enter the ocean, which stays full and yet unmoved, so one into whom all desires enter without disturbing him finds peace. The one who runs after desires does not.
Gita 2.71 · Sankhya Yoga
The person who gives up all desires and moves through life without craving, without the sense of mine and without ego, attains peace.
Gita 3.8 · Karma Yoga
Shri Krishna says: do the work that falls to you, for doing is better than not doing. Without work even the body's daily upkeep cannot go on.
Gita 3.9 · Karma Yoga
Work done as an offering (yajna) does not bind; every other kind of work binds a person to this world. So, Arjuna, do your work in that spirit, free of attachment.
Gita 3.19 · Karma Yoga
So keep doing the work that ought to be done, without clinging to it. One who works without attachment reaches the highest.

Gita 3.27 · Karma Yoga
All actions are really being done by the qualities of nature (prakriti). Yet a person confused by ego thinks: I am the doer.
Gita 3.35 · Karma Yoga
Your own duty (svadharma), even done imperfectly, is better than another's duty done well. Dying in your own duty is better; another's duty brings fear.

Arjuna had asked why a person does wrong even against his will. Shri Krishna answers: it is desire (kama), and the same thing turned into anger, born of the quality of rajas; it is never satisfied and leads to great wrong. Know this as the enemy here.

How the verses were chosen
There is no single classical rule for picking 85 of the Gita's 700 verses; the choice is ours. We took the verses that are repeated most often in discourses, textbooks, speeches and homes, and those that tradition itself has set apart, such as the Chatushloki Gita (10.8 to 10.11) and the charama shloka 18.66. We also made sure that each of the eighteen chapters is represented by at least one verse, so that the shape of the whole Gita shows.
The selection includes: the opening question of 1.1; the Sankhya Yoga teaching on the deathless self (2.11 to 2.27); karma yoga in 2.47 and 2.48; the marks of the sthitaprajna in 2.62, 2.63, 2.70 and 2.71; 3.21 and 3.35; the avatar verses 4.7 and 4.8, together with 4.11, 4.34 and 4.38; 6.5 and 6.6, where the self is its own friend and its own enemy; 9.22, 9.26 (patram pushpam), 9.29, 9.30 and 9.34; the Chatushloki Gita 10.8 to 10.11; 11.32 and 11.33; the marks of the beloved bhakta in 12.13 to 12.15 and 12.20; 15.1, 15.7 and 15.15; 16.21 and 16.24; the ॐ तत्सत् (Om tat sat) of 17.23; 18.46 and 18.61 to 18.66, ending with the charama shloka 18.66 (sarva-dharman parityajya); and the closing verse 18.78.
A verse left out is not a lesser verse. Any verse of the Gita opens fully only in the context of its chapter, so this page is a doorway to reading the whole Gita, not a substitute for it.
The eighteen chapters of the Gita

How to read
The simplest way is one verse a day: read the Hindi or English meaning first, then read the Sanskrit verse slowly two or three times, and keep it in mind through the day. At that pace this selection takes about three months, and many of the verses slowly begin to stay in memory.
Those who read the whole Gita usually take a chapter a day and finish in eighteen days; this selection can sit beside that reading as a help to the meaning. On Gita Jayanti (Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi, Mokshada Ekadashi) many people read the whole Gita or chosen chapters in one sitting; these 85 verses can also be read in one sitting on that day.
By custom, the Gita Mahatmya is read at the end of a reading of the Gita; its full text and meaning have their own page in this library. If the pronunciation feels hard, do not hurry; even a single verse read with its meaning understood is a reading.
When to read
A verse or a chapter in the morning or evening on any day; especially on Gita Jayanti (Mokshada Ekadashi) and on Ekadashi days; and whenever the mind needs steadiness or a decision needs clarity.
In your kundli
No classical text ties the Gita to any one graha. In Jyotish, Jupiter signifies scripture and dharma, the Moon signifies the mind, and the worship of Krishna is often linked with the Moon. So a Jupiter or Moon dasha, or a chart whose fifth house (learning) or ninth house (dharma) seems to call for attention, is a natural time for a regular reading of the Gita. How Jupiter and the Moon stand in your kundli, how these houses are placed and which dasha is running can be seen by building your kundli on this site.

How many verses and chapters does the Gita have?
The full Shrimad Bhagavad Gita has 18 chapters and 700 verses. It is part of the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata, where Shri Krishna teaches Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra.
Is this the whole Gita?
No. This page has 85 verses chosen by us, with at least one from each of the eighteen chapters. The full text has 700 verses. Every verse carries its chapter and verse number, so that you can find it in any complete Gita.
Which is the most famous verse of the Gita?
Two verses are quoted most. 2.47 (karmanye vadhikaraste) says that your right is to action alone, never to its fruit. In 18.66 (sarva-dharman parityajya), called the charama shloka, Shri Krishna says: leave all dharmas and come to me alone for refuge; I will free you from all sins, do not grieve. Both are in this selection.
What is the Chatushloki Gita?
The four verses 10.8 to 10.11 of the tenth chapter are called the Chatushloki Gita. Tradition takes them as the essence of the Gita: the Lord is the source of all, the wise devotees worship him with love, he gives them the yoga of understanding, and with the lamp of knowledge he clears the darkness of their ignorance. All four are in this selection.
Can a beginner start here, and how?
Yes, that is what this page is for. Start from the first verse in order, one verse a day, meaning first and then the Sanskrit. If you do not know Sanskrit, reading only the meanings is fine. When a verse stays with you, read the one-line outline of its chapter above and then read that chapter in a complete Gita.
