Gajendra Moksha is a story from the eighth book of the Bhagavata Purana, told in chapters 2, 3 and 4. Shuka tells King Parikshit how, in a lake on Mount Trikuta, a strong crocodile seized the foot of a lord of elephants. After a struggle of a thousand years, when his strength had failed and no companion could free him, the elephant called on the Supreme with a hymn he had learned in a former birth. Hari came on Garuda, split the crocodile's jaws with his discus and set him free, and both were released.
By tradition it is read as a text of surrender in trouble. People read it in hard times, when their own efforts and their own people have been no help, and as a morning practice; the phalashruti in chapter 4 also speaks of reading it in the morning to calm bad dreams. This page gives all three chapters as printed in the Gita Press mool text, a plain meaning under every shloka and, after sign-in, a free PDF of the whole text.

Wolves, boars, buffaloes, bears, porcupines, cow-tailed apes (gopuccha), jackals (shalavrika) and monkeys run as well.
Scorched by the heat, he went surrounded by tuskers and she-elephants, with young ones dripping ichor running behind him. His weight shook the mountain all round, and swarms of bees that feed on ichor attended him.
Shloka 24
Catching from far off the lake breeze laden with lotus pollen, his eyes unsteady with rut, he hurried to the edge of that lake with his thirsty herd around him.

He waded in and, lifting it with his own trunk (pushkara), drank his fill of that pure, nectar-like water, scented with the pollen of golden lotuses and lilies. He bathed himself with it, and his weariness left him.
Shloka 26
Like a loving householder he drew up water and spray with his trunk to give his she-elephants and calves to drink and to bathe them. Heady with pride and, poor creature, deluded by the maya of the Unborn Lord (Aja), he did not see the trouble coming.
Shloka 27
There, O king, a very strong crocodile (graha), driven by fate, seized his foot in rage. Fallen into danger thus by chance, the mighty elephant struggled with all his strength.
Shloka 28
Seeing their lord in such distress, dragged by that stronger creature's force, the she-elephants trumpeted in grief. The other elephants took hold of him from behind but could not pull him free.
Shloka 29
So the lord of elephants and the crocodile fought on, O king, each dragging the other in and out of the water, and a thousand years went by. Both were still alive, and the gods thought it a wonder.
Shloka 30
Then, over that long time, the elephant's strength of mind, of body and of vitality wore far down, as he was dragged through the water and sank. With the water-dweller it went the opposite way: all his strength grew.
Shloka 31
When the elephant, helpless by chance, had thus come into mortal danger and for all that time could not free himself, he thought for long and then came to this resolve.
Shloka 32
These elephants, my own kin, cannot free me in my pain, so how could the she-elephants? The crocodile is the Creator's noose around me; even so I go to him, the highest refuge.
Shloka 33
Death is a strong serpent rushing upon the living at furious speed. Whoever that Lord may be who shelters the frightened one seeking refuge from it, and in fear of whom Death itself runs, we turn to him for shelter.
Chapter 3, shloka 1

Shri Shuka says: Having so resolved in his understanding and settled his mind in his heart, the elephant began to recite the highest prayer, one he had learned in his former birth.
Shloka 2
The elephant says: Om, salutation to that Lord through whom all this has consciousness. We meditate on him, the Purusha, the first seed, the supreme Lord.
Shloka 3
In whom this world rests, from whom it came, by whom it was made, who himself is this world; who is beyond this effect and beyond its cause too: I take refuge in him, the self-existent (Svayambhu).
Shloka 4
He sees this world, set within himself by his own maya, now shining forth and now hidden. His sight is never blocked, and as witness he watches both states. May he, his own root, beyond even the highest, protect me.
Shloka 5
When in time the worlds, their guardians and all causes have wholly dissolved, there remains only a dense and fathomless darkness (tamas). Beyond even that darkness shines the all-pervading Lord.
Shloka 6
Gods and sages do not know his true state; what other creature could reach it or speak of it? As an audience cannot see through an actor moving in many guises, so the course of his play is beyond following. May he protect me.
Shloka 7
Longing to see his most auspicious state, sages of true goodness, free from attachment, keep an unworldly, flawless vow in the forest; they see themselves in all beings and are friends to all. He is my refuge.
Shloka 8
He has no birth or action, no name or form, no virtue or fault. Yet for the arising and dissolving of the world he takes these on from time to time through his own maya.
Shloka 9
Salutation to that supreme Lord, the Brahman of endless powers. Salutation to him who is without form and yet of vast forms, whose deeds are a wonder.
Shloka 10

The Ganga, Sarasvati, Nanda and Kalindi (the Yamuna), the white elephant (Airavata), Dhruva, the seven great sages (brahmarshis) and people of holy renown.
Shloka 24
Those who rise as the last part of the night ends and, clean and collected, remember these forms of mine are released from all sin.
Shloka 25
Dear one, to those who wake as night ends and praise me with this hymn, I give a clear mind when their life is ending.
Shloka 26
Shri Shuka says: So instructing him, Hrishikesha, the lord of the senses, blew his finest conch and, delighting the host of the gods, mounted Garuda, king of birds.
Reading only the stuti
Many people read not all three chapters but only the stuti in chapter 3. The Gita Press booklet called Gajendra Moksha also prints this chapter alone. On this page it starts at 'Chapter 3, shloka 1': that first shloka is the lead-in, and the elephant's hymn begins at shloka 2, with 'Om Namo Bhagavate Tasmai'.
The hymn ends at shloka 29. Shlokas 30 to 33 carry the story on: Hari's coming and the elephant's release. So those who want a short reading take all 33 shlokas of chapter 3, and, when there is time, the story in chapters 2 and 4 as well.
Who the elephant and the crocodile were
Chapter 4 tells of their former births. The crocodile had been Huhu, a fine Gandharva, turned into a crocodile by the curse of the sage Devala; by the Lord's kindness he was freed from the curse and returned to his own world.
The elephant had been Indradyumna, king of the Pandya land and a devotee of Vishnu. Once, in worship under a vow of silence, he offered no welcome to the visiting sage Agastya, who cursed him to become an elephant. By the power of his worship the hymn stayed in his memory even in an elephant's body, and by the Lord's touch he gained the rank of an attendant.
How to read it
A common way is this: rise in the morning and bathe, light a lamp before a picture of Vishnu or a shaligram, and if you can, offer a tulsi leaf and a flower. Read the whole text in one sitting or, when time is short, chapter 3. If the Sanskrit feels hard, read the meaning first and then the shloka.
In chapter 4, shlokas 17 to 25, the Lord himself speaks of waking after the last part of the night, remembering his forms and praising him with this hymn. That is why it is mostly read in the morning. At the end, Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya may be chanted.
When to read
In the morning after bathing; in a hard time, in a spirit of surrender; on Ekadashi and days of Vishnu puja; and in the morning to calm bad dreams, as the phalashruti in chapter 4 says.
In your kundli
The Bhagavata does not tie this reading to any graha, and we have found no classical rule of Jyotish that does. By its theme it can sit with two grahas: Thursday, the popular day of Vishnu puja, is Jupiter's day, and Ketu is held in Jyotish to signify moksha. So anyone who wishes may add it to their worship during a Jupiter or Ketu dasha or antardasha; this is a suggestion, not a rule. Where Jupiter and Ketu stand in your kundli and which dasha is running can be seen by building your kundli on this site.
