The Shri Krishna Chalisa is a Hindi hymn to Krishna that begins 'Banshi shobhit kar madhur'. It has two opening dohas, forty chaupais and a closing doha. The author is not known; the thirty-eighth chaupai carries the name Sundardas, taken to be the poet's signature. The Chalisa first describes the child Krishna's form, then counts his deeds, from the slaying of Putana, the lifting of Govardhan, the taming of Kaliya and the killing of Kansa to Sudama, Vidura, the Gita, Mira and Draupadi.

People read it on Janmashtami, on Ekadashi and in daily worship; it is a favourite text for peace of mind, love and a happy home. The text below is transcribed letter for letter from a printed Haridwar book, and under every chaupai is a plain meaning so that the sense travels with the recitation. After signing in you can take the whole text as a PDF.

Doha

Whoever reads this Chalisa of Krishna holding it in the heart gains the fruit of the eight siddhis, the nine treasures and the four aims of life: dharma, wealth, desire and liberation.

How to read it

After bathing, sit in a clean place with a picture or image of Bal Gopal or Krishna before you. Light a ghee lamp and offer tulsi leaves, yellow flowers and butter with sugar candy. Yellow and tulsi are held dear to Krishna.

Begin with the two opening dohas, read all forty chaupais in order with clear pronunciation, and end on the closing doha. The custom is to chant 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' before the reading and to sing 'Aarti Kunj Bihari Ki' after it, but the Chalisa by itself is counted a complete recitation.

The last chaupai, 'open the curtain now and grant your darshan', carries the feeling of a shrine's doors opening, so many homes read it in the morning as the curtain of the home shrine is drawn back, or before the evening aarti.

Meaning and fruit

The Chalisa is a picture of Krishna's whole life. First comes meditation on the child with the flute, the peacock crown, the yellow robe and the curling locks; then the deeds of Braj: Putana, Aghasura and Bakasura, the forest fire, Indra's rain and Govardhan, Kaliya and the rasa dance; then the work of Mathura and Dwarka: the killing of Kansa, the freeing of his parents, the end of Narakasura and Jarasandha; and last the protection of his devotees: Sudama, Vidura, Arjuna, Mira, Shishupala and Draupadi.

All these examples say one thing: Krishna hungers for love, not for wealth. Vidura's greens and Sudama's rice are dearer to him than Duryodhana's delicacies, and he keeps the honour of whoever calls on him with a true heart. That is why people read this Chalisa for support in trouble, for peace of mind, and for love and happiness at home.

The closing doha names its own fruit: whoever reads it from the heart gains the eight siddhis, the nine treasures and all four aims of life. Tradition counts devotion itself as the greatest fruit, and that is what the poet Sundardas asks for in the thirty-eighth and thirty-ninth chaupais.

Reading it on Janmashtami

Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami, Janmashtami, is the festival of Krishna's birth and the chief day for this Chalisa. The custom is to fast, bathe Laddu Gopal, dress him in new clothes, decorate his swing, and keep up bhajans through the night until the hour of his birth. Reading the Krishna Chalisa together as a family during that vigil is a fine way to keep the day.

The panchang on this site shows the next date of Janmashtami and of every Ekadashi, so there is no need to work the day out separately.

In your kundli

In Jyotish the worship of Krishna is tied to the Moon and Venus. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra links the Krishna avatar to the Moon, and the Moon rules the mind, the mother and the emotions: when the Moon is debilitated in Scorpio, waning, afflicted by Saturn, Rahu or Ketu, or running its mahadasha or antardasha, this Chalisa is read to steady the mind. Venus rules love, beauty, music and married life: when Venus is debilitated in Virgo, combust near the Sun, the seventh house is afflicted, or a Venus period is running, the worship of Krishna the flute player is again advised.
