1. दोहाDoha

   विष्णु सुनिए विनय सेवक की चितलाय। कीरत कुछ वर्णन करूँ दीजै ज्ञान बताय॥

   हे विष्णु, अपने सेवक की विनती मन लगाकर सुनिए। मैं आपकी कीर्ति का कुछ वर्णन करना चाहता हूँ; मुझे उसका ज्ञान देकर मार्ग बताइए।Vishnu, listen with attention to your servant's plea. I wish to tell something of your glory; give me the knowledge and show me how.

2. चौपाईChaupai 1

   नमो विष्णु भगवान् खरारी। कष्ट नशावन अखिल बिहारी॥

   हे भगवान विष्णु, आपको नमस्कार है। आप खरारी (खर नामक राक्षस के शत्रु, राम रूप में) हैं, कष्टों का नाश करने वाले हैं और सारे जगत में विहार करते हैं।Salutations to Lord Vishnu, Kharari (enemy of the demon Khara, as Rama), destroyer of suffering, who moves through the whole universe.

3. चौपाईChaupai 2

   प्रबल जगत में शक्ति तुम्हारी। त्रिभुवन फैल रही उजियारी॥

   संसार में आपकी शक्ति प्रबल है और आपका प्रकाश तीनों लोकों में फैला हुआ है।Your power is mighty in the world, and your light spreads through the three worlds.

4. चौपाईChaupai 3

   सुन्दर रूप मनोहर सूरत। सरल स्वभाव मोहनी मूरत॥

   आपका रूप सुन्दर है, मुख मन को हरने वाला है, स्वभाव सरल है और आपकी मूर्ति मोह लेने वाली है।Your form is beautiful and your face charming; your nature is simple and your image enchanting.

5. चौपाईChaupai 4

   तन पर पीताम्बर अति सोहत। बैजन्ती माला मन मोहत॥

   आपके शरीर पर पीताम्बर (पीला रेशमी वस्त्र) अत्यन्त शोभा देता है और वैजयन्ती माला मन को मोह लेती है।The pitambar, the yellow silk on your body, looks splendid, and the Vaijayanti garland captivates the mind.

6. चौपाईChaupai 5

   शंख चक्र कर गदा बिराजे। देखत दैत्य असुर दल भाजे॥

   आपके हाथों में शंख, चक्र और गदा सुशोभित हैं, जिन्हें देखते ही दैत्यों और असुरों के दल भाग जाते हैं।Conch, discus and mace shine in your hands; at the sight of them the hosts of daityas and asuras flee.

7. चौपाईChaupai 6

   सत्य धर्म मद लोभ न गाजे। काम क्रोध मद लोभ न छाजे॥

   आपमें सत्य और धर्म हैं; मद और लोभ आपके सामने गरज नहीं पाते। काम, क्रोध, मद और लोभ आपको छू भी नहीं सकते।Truth and dharma are yours; pride and greed cannot roar before you. Desire, anger, pride and greed have no place in you.

8. चौपाईChaupai 7

   सन्तभक्त सज्जन मनरंजन। दनुज असुर दुष्टन दल गंजन॥

   आप सन्तों, भक्तों और सज्जनों के मन को आनन्द देने वाले हैं, और दानवों, असुरों तथा दुष्टों के दल का नाश करने वाले हैं।You gladden the hearts of saints, devotees and good people, and you crush the hosts of danavas, asuras and the wicked.

9. चौपाईChaupai 8

   सुख उपजाय कष्ट सब भंजन। दोष मिटाय करत जन सज्जन॥

   आप सुख उत्पन्न करते हैं और सब कष्ट तोड़ देते हैं। लोगों के दोष मिटाकर आप उन्हें सज्जन बना देते हैं।You bring forth happiness and break every suffering. Wiping away people's faults, you make them good.

10. चौपाईChaupai 9

    पाप काट भव सिन्धु उतारण। कष्ट नाशकर भक्त उबारण॥

    आप पाप काटकर संसार-सागर से पार उतारने वाले हैं, और कष्ट का नाश करके भक्तों का उद्धार करने वाले हैं।Cutting away sin, you carry people across the ocean of worldly life; destroying suffering, you rescue your devotees.

11. चौपाईChaupai 10

    करत अनेक रूप प्रभु धारण। केवल आप भक्ति के कारण॥

    हे प्रभु, आप अनेक रूप धारण करते हैं, और यह केवल भक्ति के कारण, भक्तों के लिए करते हैं।Lord, you take many forms, and you do it only for the sake of devotion, for your devotees.

12. चौपाईChaupai 11

    धरणि धेनु बन तुमहिं पुकारा। तब तुम रूप राम का धारा॥

    जब पृथ्वी ने गाय का रूप धरकर आपको पुकारा, तब आपने राम का रूप धारण किया।When the Earth took the form of a cow and called out to you, you took the form of Rama.

13. चौपाईChaupai 12

    भार उतार असुर दल मारा। रावण आदिक को संहारा॥

    पृथ्वी का भार उतारकर आपने असुरों के दल को मारा और रावण आदि का संहार किया।Lifting the Earth's burden, you killed the hosts of asuras and destroyed Ravana and the rest.

14. चौपाईChaupai 13

    आप वाराह रूप बनाया। हिरण्याक्ष को मार गिराया॥

    आपने वराह (शूकर) का रूप बनाया और हिरण्याक्ष को मार गिराया।You took the form of Varaha, the boar, and struck down Hiranyaksha.

15. चौपाईChaupai 14

    धर मतस्य तन सिन्धु बनाया। चौदह रतनन को निकलाया॥

    मत्स्य (मछली) का शरीर धारण करके आपने सागर में लीला रची और चौदह रत्नों को बाहर निकलवाया।Taking the body of Matsya, the fish, you worked your play in the ocean and had the fourteen gems brought out.

16. चौपाईChaupai 15

    अमिलख असुरन द्वन्द मचाया। रूप मोहनी आप दिखाया॥

    अमृत को देखकर असुरों ने झगड़ा मचाया, तब आपने मोहिनी का रूप दिखाया।Seeing the nectar, the asuras started a quarrel, and you showed yourself as Mohini, the enchantress.

17. चौपाईChaupai 16

    देवन को अमृत पान कराया। असुरन को छबि से बहलाया॥

    आपने देवताओं को अमृत पिलाया और असुरों को अपनी सुन्दर छवि से बहला दिया।You gave the gods the nectar to drink and kept the asuras distracted with your beauty.

18. चौपाईChaupai 17

    कूर्म रूप धर सिंन्धु मझाया। मन्द्राचल गिरि तुरत उठाया॥

    कूर्म (कछुए) का रूप धरकर आपने समुद्र मथवाया और मन्दराचल पर्वत को तुरन्त अपनी पीठ पर उठा लिया।Taking the form of Kurma, the tortoise, you had the ocean churned and at once bore Mount Mandara on your back.

19. चौपाईChaupai 18

    शंकर का तुम फन्द छुड़ाया। भस्मासुर को रूप दिखाया॥

    आपने शंकर को संकट के फंदे से छुड़ाया: भस्मासुर को अपना (मोहिनी) रूप दिखाया।You freed Shankar from the snare: you showed Bhasmasura your form as Mohini.

20. चौपाईChaupai 19

    वेदन को जब असुर डुबाया। कर प्रबन्ध उन्हें ढुँढवाया॥

    जब एक असुर ने वेदों को (जल में) डुबो दिया, तब आपने प्रबन्ध करके उन्हें ढूँढ़कर निकलवाया।When an asura sank the Vedas in the waters, you made it your work to have them found and brought back.

21. चौपाईChaupai 20

    मोहित बनकर खलहि नचाया। उसही कर से भस्म कराया॥

    मोह लेने वाला रूप बनाकर आपने उस दुष्ट (भस्मासुर) को नचाया और उसी के हाथ से उसे भस्म करवा दिया।Taking an enchanting form, you made that villain, Bhasmasura, dance, and had him burned to ash by his own hand.

22. चौपाईChaupai 21

    असुर जलंधर अति बलदाई। शंकर से उन कीन्ह लड़ाई॥

    जलन्धर नाम का असुर अत्यन्त बलवान था; उसने शंकर से युद्ध किया।The asura Jalandhar was immensely strong, and he went to war with Shankar.

23. चौपाईChaupai 22

    हार पार शिव सकल बनाई। कीन सती से छल खल जाई॥

    शिव ने हराने के सारे उपाय कर लिए (पर वह न हारा)। फिर उस दुष्ट ने जाकर सती (शिव की पत्नी) से छल किया।Shiva tried every means to defeat him, without success. Then the villain went and played a trick on Sati, Shiva's wife.

24. चौपाईChaupai 23

    सुमिरन कीन तुम्हें शिवरानी। बतलाई सब विपत कहानी॥

    शिव की रानी (पार्वती) ने आपका स्मरण किया और अपनी विपत्ति की सारी कहानी आपको बताई।Shiva's queen, Parvati, called on you and told you the whole story of her trouble.

25. चौपाईChaupai 24

    तब तुम बने मुनीश्वर ज्ञानी। वृन्दा की सब सुरति भुलानी॥

    तब आपने एक ज्ञानी मुनीश्वर का रूप बनाया और (जलन्धर की पत्नी) वृन्दा की सारी सुध-बुध भुला दी।Then you became a learned sage and made Vrinda, Jalandhar's wife, lose all her awareness.

26. चौपाईChaupai 25

    देखत तीन दनुज शैतानी। वृन्दा आय तुम्हें लपटानी॥

    तीन दुष्ट दानवों को देखकर (डरी हुई) वृन्दा आकर आपसे लिपट गई।Seeing three wicked demons, Vrinda in her fear came and clung to you.

27. चौपाईChaupai 26

    हो स्पर्श धर्म क्षति मानी। हना असुर उर शिव शैतानी॥

    उस स्पर्श से वृन्दा का पतिव्रत-धर्म भंग माना गया, और तब शिव ने उस दुष्ट असुर का हृदय भेदकर उसे मार डाला।With that touch Vrinda's vow of fidelity was counted broken, and then Shiva pierced the wicked asura's heart and slew him.

28. चौपाईChaupai 27

    तुमने धुरू प्रहलाद उबारे। हिरणाकुश आदिक खल मारे॥

    आपने ध्रुव और प्रह्लाद का उद्धार किया, और हिरण्यकशिपु आदि दुष्टों को मारा।You saved Dhruva and Prahlad, and killed Hiranyakashipu and other villains.

29. चौपाईChaupai 28

    गणिका और अजामिल तारे। बहुत भक्त भव सिन्धु उतारे॥

    आपने गणिका (पिंगला वेश्या) और अजामिल को तार दिया, और बहुत से भक्तों को संसार-सागर से पार उतारा।You saved Ganika the courtesan and Ajamil, and carried many devotees across the ocean of worldly life.

30. चौपाईChaupai 29

    हरहु सकल संताप हमारे। कृपा करहु हरि सिरजन हारे॥

    हे हरि, हे सृष्टि रचने वाले, हमारे सारे सन्ताप हर लीजिए और हम पर कृपा कीजिए।Hari, maker of the world, take away all our sorrows and be gracious to us.

31. चौपाईChaupai 30

    देखहुँ मैं नित दरश तुम्हारे। दीन बन्धु भक्तन हितकारे॥

    हे दीनों के बन्धु, भक्तों का हित करने वाले, मैं नित्य आपके दर्शन करता रहूँ।Friend of the lowly, well-wisher of devotees, may I see your darshan every day.

32. चौपाईChaupai 31

    चहत आपका सेवक दर्शन। करहु दया अपनी मधुसूदन॥

    आपका सेवक आपके दर्शन चाहता है। हे मधुसूदन (मधु दैत्य को मारने वाले), अपनी दया कीजिए।Your servant longs for your darshan. Madhusudan, slayer of the demon Madhu, show me your mercy.

33. चौपाईChaupai 32

    जानूं नहीं योग्य जप पूजन। होय यज्ञ स्तुति अनुमोदन॥

    मैं उचित जप और पूजन की विधि नहीं जानता; मेरे यज्ञ और स्तुति को आप स्वीकार कर लें।I do not know the proper way of japa or puja; may my offering and my praise be accepted.

34. चौपाईChaupai 33

    शीलदया सन्तोष सुलक्षण। विदित नहीं व्रतबोध विलक्षण॥

    शील, दया, सन्तोष और अच्छे लक्षण मुझमें नहीं हैं, और व्रत का विशेष ज्ञान भी मुझे विदित नहीं है।Good conduct, compassion, contentment and fine qualities are not mine, nor do I have any special knowledge of vows.

35. चौपाईChaupai 34

    करहुँ आपका किस विधि पूजन। कुमति विलोक होत दुख भीषण॥

    मैं आपका पूजन किस विधि से करूँ? अपनी कुबुद्धि को देखकर मुझे भारी दुःख होता है।In what way should I worship you? When I look at my own foolishness, I feel deep sorrow.

36. चौपाईChaupai 35

    करहुँ प्रणाम कौन विधिसुमिरण। कौन भांति मैं करहु समर्पण॥

    मैं किस विधि से आपको प्रणाम करूँ, कैसे आपका स्मरण करूँ, और किस प्रकार अपने को आपको समर्पित करूँ?How should I bow to you, how should I remember you, and in what way should I give myself to you?

37. चौपाईChaupai 36

    सुर मुनि करत सदा सिवकाई। हर्षित रहत परम गति पाई॥

    देवता और मुनि सदा आपकी सेवा करते हैं, और परम गति पाकर आनन्दित रहते हैं।Gods and sages serve you always, and having reached the highest state, they live in joy.

38. चौपाईChaupai 37

    दीन दुखिन पर सदा सहाई। निज जन जान लेव अपनाई॥

    आप दीनों और दुखियों के सदा सहायक हैं; मुझे अपना जन जानकर अपना लीजिए।You are always the helper of the lowly and the suffering; know me as your own and take me in.

39. चौपाईChaupai 38

    पाप दोष संताप नशाओ। भव बन्धन से मुक्त कराओ॥

    मेरे पाप, दोष और सन्ताप नष्ट कीजिए और मुझे संसार के बन्धन से मुक्त कराइए।Destroy my sins, faults and sorrows, and free me from the bonds of worldly life.

40. चौपाईChaupai 39

    सुत सम्पति दे सुख उपजाओ। निज चरनन का दास बनाओ॥

    सन्तान और सम्पत्ति देकर सुख उत्पन्न कीजिए, और मुझे अपने चरणों का दास बना लीजिए।Grant children and wealth and bring forth happiness, and make me the servant of your feet.

41. चौपाईChaupai 40

    निगम सदा ये विनय सुनावै। पढ़ै सुनै सो जन सुख पावै॥

    निगम (वेद) सदा यही विनती सुनाते हैं। जो इसे पढ़ता या सुनता है, वह सुख पाता है।The Vedas ever voice this same prayer. Whoever reads it or hears it finds happiness.

किसी भी दिन पढ़ी जा सकती है। गुरुवार भगवान विष्णु और बृहस्पति का दिन है, इसलिए उस दिन का पाठ विशेष माना जाता है। एकादशी और पूर्णिमा पर भी इसका पाठ होता है।On any day. Thursday is the day of Vishnu and of Jupiter, so a reading on Thursday is held special. It is also read on Ekadashi and Purnima.

विष्णु चालीसा का पाठ कितनी बार करें?How many times should it be read?

सामान्यतः एक बार प्रतिदिन, या हर गुरुवार एक बार, पर्याप्त है। किसी विशेष संकल्प के लिए लोग ग्यारह या इक्कीस गुरुवार तक नियम से पाठ करते हैं, या एक दिन में सात या ग्यारह बार पढ़ते हैं।Once a day, or once every Thursday, is usually enough. For a particular vow people read it faithfully for eleven or twenty-one Thursdays, or seven or eleven times in a single day.

परम्परा में इसे मन की शान्ति, घर में सुख-समृद्धि, सन्तान-सुख और कष्टों से रक्षा देने वाला माना गया है; चालीसा की अन्तिम चौपाई कहती है कि जो इसे पढ़ता या सुनता है, वह सुख पाता है। ज्योतिष में यह कमज़ोर गुरु और बुध का उपाय है।Tradition holds that it gives peace of mind, well-being in the home, the joy of children and protection from suffering; its last chaupai says that whoever reads or hears it finds happiness. In Jyotish it is a remedy for a weak Jupiter and Mercury.

विष्णु चालीसा पढ़ने के नियम क्या हैं?What are the rules for reading the Vishnu Chalisa?

स्नान करके स्वच्छ वस्त्र पहनें, दीपक जलाएँ और शान्त मन से, बिना जल्दबाज़ी के पढ़ें। गुरुवार को पीले वस्त्र और पीला भोग, तथा भोग पर तुलसी-दल रखने की परम्परा है। कोई कठोर नियम नहीं है; श्रद्धा से किया गया पाठ ही मुख्य है।Bathe, put on clean clothes, light a lamp and read with a calm mind, without hurrying. On Thursdays the custom is yellow clothes, a yellow offering and a tulsi leaf on the offering. There is no strict rule; reading with faith is what matters.
