The Surya Kavach, printed as the Surya Kavacha Stotram, is a short armour-hymn of seven shlokas which the sage Yajnavalkya recites to an eminent sage. Its colophon calls it composed by Yajnavalkya, so tradition attributes it to him; the print does not say which Purana or Tantra it belongs to. The first shloka introduces the kavach, the second is a meditation on the thousand-rayed Sun, the third to the fifth give one of the Sun's names for each part of the body from head to foot, and the last two are the phalashruti. Aditya is a name of Surya (the son of Aditi), so people who search for an 'Aditya Kavach' are usually looking for this armour of the Sun, though other kavachas under that name exist in the texts as well.

People read it for health, radiance and inner strength, on Sundays and after offering water (arghya) to the Sun; in Jyotish it is held to be a remedy for the Sun graha. This page gives the full text as printed in the Khemraj (Shri Venkateshwar Press) Brihat Stotra Ratnakar, a plain meaning under every shloka that also explains each of the Sun's names, and, after sign-in, a free PDF of the whole text.

The text

Shloka 1

The sage Yajnavalkya said: Listen, O tiger among sages (munishardula), to this auspicious armour of Surya. It is divine, gives health to the body and grants every kind of good fortune.

Dhyana 2

Having meditated on the thousand-rayed Sun (sahasrakirana), with his blazing crown and his shimmering makara earrings (shaped like the makara, a sea-creature), one should recite this hymn.

Shloka 3

May Bhaskara (the maker of light) guard my head, Amitadyuti (of boundless radiance) my forehead, Dinamani (jewel of the day) my eyes, and Vasareshvara (lord of the day) my ears.

Shloka 4

May Gharmaghrini (whose rays are heat) guard my nose, Vedavahana (whose carrier is the Veda) my face, Manada (giver of honour) my tongue, and Suravandita (worshipped by the gods) my throat.

Shloka 5

May Prabhakara (who spreads light) guard my shoulders, Janapriya (beloved of the people) my chest, Dvadashatma (whose self is the twelve Adityas) my feet, and Sakaleshvara (lord of all) my whole body.

Phalashruti 6

Here the phalashruti begins: whoever writes this hymn, which is the Sun's protection, on birch bark (bhurja-patra) and wears it on the hand has all siddhis (attainments) under their control.

Phalashruti 7

Whoever, well bathed, recites it properly, and whoever studies it with a calm and settled mind, becomes free of illness and long-lived, and gains happiness and nourishment (pushti, strength and plenty). With this the Surya Kavach is complete.

Where the kavach comes from

In the Khemraj (Shri Venkateshwar Press) Brihat Stotra Ratnakar, the section of Surya stotras prints two Surya kavachas one after the other: first the long Trailokyamangala Surya Kavach of the Brahmayamala, and right after it this seven-shloka Surya Kavacha Stotram. They are different texts; this page gives only the second, Yajnavalkya's kavach. Its colophon reads: here ends the Surya Kavacha Stotram composed by Shri Yajnavalkya.

Yajnavalkya is the seer of the Shukla Yajurveda, and by tradition he received that Veda from the Sun himself, which is why his name sits naturally with a hymn to Surya. All seven shlokas are in the anushtup metre. The other edition of the same book (the one compiled by Shivadatt Kavi) prints the same seven shlokas in the same order.

How to read it

On a Sunday at sunrise, bathe, put on clean clothes, face east and offer water (arghya) to the Sun from a copper vessel, with a red flower or a little roli in the water if you like. Then sit on a mat and meditate on the Sun as the second shloka describes him: the blazing crown, the makara earrings and the thousand rays. After that read all seven shlokas in one sitting, with clear pronunciation.

The last shloka itself asks that the reading be done well bathed and with a calm mind. The sixth speaks of writing the kavach on birch bark and wearing it on the hand; that is a traditional practice done under the guidance of a knowledgeable guru or priest, while most people simply read the text. Chanting Om Ghrinih Suryaya Namah after the reading is also a common practice.

Meaning and fruit

Shlokas 3 to 5 give twelve of the Sun's names for guarding the body, and each name tells one of his qualities: Bhaskara and Prabhakara give light, Amitadyuti has boundless radiance, Dinamani and Vasareshvara are the jewel and the lord of the day, Manada gives honour, Dvadashatma is the twelve Adityas of the twelve months, and Sakaleshvara is lord of all. The reader covers the body from head to foot with the light of these names.

The phalashruti speaks of health of body, freedom from illness, long life, happiness, nourishment, good fortune and siddhis. These are the statements of tradition, not a promise of any result; what readers find is that a regular reading, together with the habit of offering water to the Sun, brings discipline to the day and energy to the mind. In illness the reading goes alongside treatment, never in its place.
