The Aditya Hridaya Stotra is the best-known Sanskrit hymn to the Sun, and it comes in the Yuddha Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana. During the last battle with Ravana, when Rama stood weary and lost in thought, the sage Agastya taught him this 'heart of Aditya'. Its 31 shlokas declare that the Sun is Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and every god, salute him by his many names, and end by telling how Rama recited it and took up his bow.

As part of the Ramayana it is traditionally attributed to the sage Valmiki; within the story it is spoken by Agastya, who is also named as its seer in the viniyoga. People read it at sunrise, on Sundays, in hard times, before a big undertaking or an examination, and in Jyotish as a remedy for the Sun. This page gives the full text as printed in the Gita Press, Gorakhpur booklet (code 211), with the viniyoga, nyasa and Gayatri; a plain meaning under every shloka that explains each of the Sun's names; and, after sign-in, a free PDF of the whole text.

On hearing this, the radiant Raghava was at once free of grief. Well pleased and with a collected, pure mind (prayatatmavan), he took the hymn to heart (dharayamasa).

Shloka 29

Gazing at the Sun (Aditya) and reciting this hymn, he was filled with supreme joy. Then, having sipped water three times (achamana) and become pure, the valiant Rama took up his bow.

Shloka 30

Looking at Ravana, his heart full of joy, he advanced to win; with all his great effort he set himself to slay him.

Shloka 31

Then Ravi, the Sun, standing amid the host of gods, looked at Rama with a glad heart and, rejoicing greatly, knowing that the end of the lord of the night-roamers (Ravana) was near, said: 'Hurry!'

Where the hymn comes from

The Aditya Hridaya is a sarga of the Yuddha Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana. The last battle between Rama and Ravana is under way; Rama, tired from the fighting, stands lost in thought, and Ravana has come before him again, ready to fight. Then the sage Agastya, who had come with the gods to watch the battle, comes up to Rama, recites this hymn to him and leaves as he came. Rama looks at the Sun and recites it, sips water three times and takes up his bow against Ravana; in the last shloka the Sun himself, from among the gods, tells him: 'Hurry!'

The Gita Press booklet gives no sarga number; its English translation only ends with 'From: Valmiki Ramayana'. In the Gita Press numbering of the Ramayana, which Sanskrit Wikisource also follows, it is sarga 105 of the Yuddha Kanda; some other editions number it 106 or 107, and the text current in South India differs in a number of words (for example 'bhagavan rishih' at the end of the second shloka). The viniyoga, nyasa and Gayatri at the start are not part of the Ramayana's sarga; they are the order of recitation that the Gita Press booklet prints before the hymn.

It should not be confused with the 'Aditya Hridaya' of the Bhavishyottara Purana. That is a different hymn, in which Krishna tells Arjuna of the Sun's glory. The text on this page is the one from the Valmiki Ramayana, in which the sage Agastya teaches Rama, and which begins 'tato yuddhaparishrantam'.

How to read it

By tradition the Aditya Hridaya is read at sunrise, facing east. Bathe, put on clean clothes, offer water to the rising Sun from a copper vessel (arghya; red flowers and unbroken rice may be added), then sit on a mat and recite.

The order in the Gita Press booklet is: the viniyoga first, then the rishyadi nyasa, the karanyasa and the anganyasa, then meditation on and salutation to the Sun with the Gayatri mantra, and after that the 31 shlokas. The booklet also says the nyasa may be done with Om alone, with the Gayatri, or with the six names of shloka 6; it prints the nyasa with the six names. When time is short, many people read the 31 shlokas directly.

In shloka 26 Agastya says that whoever recites it three times wins in battle, so many read it three times. Read the Sanskrit slowly and clearly; shlokas 6 to 21 are names of the Sun, and reading them with their meaning brings out the sense of each name. At the end, bow to the Sun.

How the hymn is built, and its fruit

Shlokas 1 and 2 set the scene, in shlokas 3 to 5 Agastya praises the hymn, and shloka 6 is the command to worship the Sun, whose six names are also used in the nyasa. Shlokas 7 to 15 declare that the Sun is Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Indra, Yama, Varuna and every god, and list his names; shlokas 16 to 21 are verses of salutation; shlokas 22 to 24 say that creation and destruction, heat and rain, and sacrifice all run through the Sun. Shlokas 25 to 27 are the phalashruti and Agastya's last words, and shlokas 28 to 31 tell what Rama did next.

The hymn names its own fruits: it destroys every enemy, brings victory, removes sin, calms worry and grief and lengthens life (shlokas 4 and 5), and whoever sings it in danger, hardship, the wild forest or fear does not sink in despair (shloka 25). These are best understood in the language of faith: the hymn steadies a tired and troubled Rama, and in that spirit people by tradition read it in hard times, before a big examination or a decisive undertaking.

In your kundli

In Jyotish the Aditya Hridaya is held to be the chief hymn of the Sun. The Sun signifies the self, the father, the state and authority, rank and standing, self-confidence and health, above all vitality, the heart, the eyes and the bones. By tradition its recitation is given as a remedy when the Sun is debilitated (in Libra), afflicted by Saturn, Rahu or Ketu, weak in the sixth, eighth or twelfth house, or when the houses of the father and of work (the ninth and tenth) are afflicted; and during a Sun mahadasha or antardasha, especially when relations with the father, with those in authority at work, or one's own confidence feel strained. The custom is to read it on Sundays at sunrise after offering water to the Sun. It is a way to steady the mind, not a promise of results, and it does not replace a doctor's advice. Where the Sun stands in your kundli and which dasha is running can be seen by building your kundli on this site.
