The Narayana Upanishad is a short Upanishad in Sanskrit prose, which Gita Press prints as Narayana Atharvashirsha alongside the Atharvashirshas of Ganapati, Shiva, Devi and Surya. It has only five mantras: the rise of creation from Narayana, the statement that everything is Narayana, the eight-syllable mantra Om Namo Narayanaya, the pranava (Om) and the names of Narayana, and finally the fruit of reading it. The printed text names no author. Please note that this is not the long Mahanarayana Upanishad, which is part of the Taittiriya Aranyaka; they are two separate works.

By tradition it is read in the worship of Narayana, for an understanding of the eight-syllable mantra, and as a regular morning and evening recitation. This page gives the full text as printed in the Gita Press, Gorakhpur Panchadeva Atharvashirsha Sangraha, with its shanti path, a plain meaning under every mantra that also explains the harder words, and, after sign-in, a free PDF of the whole text.

Shanti Path

This is a prayer said together by teacher and pupil: may the Lord protect the two of us together and sustain the two of us together, and may we work with vigour together. May our study be full of light, and may no ill will come between us. Om, peace, peace, peace.

Mantra 1

The Purusha, Narayana, desired: may I bring forth beings. From Narayana are born the life-breath (prana), the mind and all the senses, and also space (kha), air, light, water and the earth that upholds the universe. From Narayana are born Brahma, Rudra, Indra and Prajapati; the twelve Adityas, the Rudras, the Vasus and all the chhandas (the Vedic hymns) arise from Narayana alone, are set going by him and dissolve in him. Whoever studies this studies the head (shiras, the crown) of the Rigveda.

Mantra 2

Narayana is eternal. Brahma is Narayana, and so are Shiva, Shakra (Indra) and Time; the directions, the points between them, above, below, within and without are all Narayana. All this, what has been and what is yet to be, is Narayana alone. Without stain (nishkalanka), without taint (niranjana), without division (nirvikalpa), beyond naming (nirakhyata), pure, the one God is Narayana and there is no second; one who knows this becomes Vishnu, as the mantra says twice. Whoever studies this studies the head of the Yajurveda.

Mantra 3

Say Om first, then Namah, and last Narayanaya. Om is one syllable, Namah two and Narayanaya five; this is Narayana's word of eight syllables. The mantra says that whoever studies this eight-syllable word of Narayana lives out the full span of life free from reproach (anapabruva); that person gains lordship over beings (prajapatya), increase of wealth (rayasposha) and lordship over cattle (gaupatya), and then attains immortality, which is said twice. Whoever studies this studies the head of the Samaveda.

Mantra 4

The bliss within (pratyagananda), the Brahman-Purusha, has the pranava for its form: A, U and M. These came together in many ways and that is this Om, by uttering which the yogi is freed from the bondage of birth and worldly life; and it is said that the worshipper of the mantra Om Namo Narayanaya will go to the realm of Vaikuntha. That is this pundarika (white lotus), which interpreters take to be Vaikuntha or the lotus of the heart; it is dense with knowing (vijnanaghana), and so radiant as lightning. The son of Devaki, Madhusudana (slayer of the demon Madhu), Pundarikaksha (the lotus-eyed) and Vishnu Achyuta (the one who never falls) are brahmanya (devoted to Brahman and to brahmins). The one Narayana abiding in all beings is the Purusha who is the cause, himself without cause, the supreme Brahman: Om. Whoever studies this studies the head of the Atharvaveda.

Mantra 5

This is the Upanishad's own statement of fruit. By its words, one who reads it in the morning destroys the sin done in the night, and one who reads it in the evening the sin done in the day; one who reads it at both evening and morning, even a sinner, becomes sinless. One who reads it at midday facing the sun (Aditya) is released from the five great sins and the lesser sins (upapataka) and gains the merit of reciting all the Vedas. One who knows this attains sayujya (union) with Narayana, attains sayujya with the glorious Narayana.

Closing Shanti Path

The printed text calls for this same shanti path at the end of the Upanishad as well. The meaning is that of the opening shanti path: may teacher and pupil be protected and sustained together, may their study be full of light, and may there be no ill will between them.

This is not the Mahanarayana Upanishad

The text on this page is the short Narayana Upanishad, which has five mantras and opens with Om Atha Purusho Ha Vai Narayano'kamayata. Gita Press calls it the Narayana Atharvashirsha. The Mahanarayana Upanishad is a separate and far longer work, the tenth prapathaka of the Taittiriya Aranyaka of the Krishna Yajurveda, and it opens with Ambhasyapare Bhuvanasya Madhye.

The confusion over the names is natural. The Nirnay Sagar Press collection of 108 Upanishads prints both, one after the other, under the same name Narayanopanishat: the short one as number 18 and the long one as number 19. When picking up a text or a PDF, the opening words are the simplest test. The long work is not on this page.

What the five mantras say

The first mantra gives the order of creation: by Narayana's desire the life-breath, mind, senses, five elements and gods appear, and in the end they dissolve in him. The second goes further and says that Brahma, Shiva, Indra, Time, the directions and all that exists are Narayana alone. The third counts out the eight syllables of Om Namo Narayanaya, and the fourth speaks of the A, U and M of the pranava and of Narayana's names.

Each of the first four mantras closes by calling itself the head of, in turn, the Rigveda, the Yajurveda, the Samaveda and the Atharvaveda. The fifth is a statement of fruit, which gives the result of reading at morning, evening and midday and speaks of the merit of reciting all the Vedas. There is no story anywhere in the Upanishad; it speaks in plain statements.

How to read it

Bathe, put on clean clothes and light a lamp before a picture of Vishnu or Narayana. Read the shanti path first, then the five mantras in order, and finally the shanti path again. The whole text is short and sits easily in one sitting. If you wish, follow it with japa of Om Namo Narayanaya in the order the third mantra gives.

This print carries no Vedic accent marks, so it can be read like prose with clear pronunciation; if the Sanskrit feels hard, read the meaning of each mantra first. To recite it with the Vedic accents, it is best learnt from a knowledgeable teacher.

When to read

The fifth mantra itself names three times: morning, evening, and midday facing the sun. Ekadashi and Thursday are days of Vishnu worship, so many people also read it on those days and at Vishnu puja.

In your kundli

In Jyotish the worship of Vishnu is usually linked with Jupiter and Mercury. When Jupiter or Mercury is weak in the kundli, or during their mahadasha or antardasha, hymns to Vishnu and japa of Om Namo Narayanaya are given by tradition as a remedy, and this Upanishad gives the order and syllables of that very mantra. Where Jupiter and Mercury stand in your kundli and which dasha is running can be seen by building your kundli on this site.
