Bal Kand is the first and longest book of Goswami Tulsidas's Shri Ramcharitmanas. It opens with invocations and the glory of the Name, then runs through Sati's doubt, the wedding of Shiv and Parvati, the causes of the avatar, the birth of Ram, Ahalya, the flower garden, the breaking of the bow, Parshuram's arrival and the wedding of Sita and Ram. The book has 361 dohas or sorathas.
This page is not the whole of Bal Kand; it is an essence. First come 93 passages chosen from a Gita Press print, in story order, each marked with its episode and doha number so you can find it in any complete Manas. Below them the whole story is told in order in our own words. The choice of passages is ours: the lines most often sung and quoted, and those that carry the story forward.
Every line of the text was taken from the page of the printed copy and checked against it. Each meaning and the whole retelling are our own writing and are not taken from any commentary.

Tulsidas first bows to the goddess of speech and to Vinayak. Between them, he says, they make letters and meanings, moods and metres, and all that is auspicious.

Tulsidas bows to Bhavani and Shankar as faith and trust given form. Without these two, he says, even the perfected cannot see the Lord who sits inside their own hearts.

Here Tulsidas bows to Hari who bears the name Ram, beyond every cause. All the world, from Brahma down through gods and demons, is held in his maya, and it seems real only because he is real, as a rope can pass for a snake. His feet, the poet says, are the one boat for those who would cross the ocean of worldly life.

Tulsidas says why he writes. What the Puranas, Vedas and Agamas agree on, told in the Ramayana and sometimes elsewhere, this story of Raghunath, he is setting down in the common tongue for the joy of his own heart.
Invocation · soratha 1
Tulsidas asks for the favour of the elephant-faced leader of the ganas. The poet says that remembering him brings success, and calls him a store of wisdom and good qualities.

To Tulsidas the pollen on his guru's lotus feet is a medicine. It has taste, fragrance and the juice of love, and he calls it a powder of nectar herb that quiets the world's ailments, the whole family of them. It is this pollen he bows to.

Water, land and sky hold creatures of four origins and eighty-four lakh kinds. Tulsidas sees Sita and Ram in all of them, and so bows to the entire world with folded hands.

Tulsidas bows to Ram, the name of the best of the Raghus. Fire, sun and moon spring from it, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiv are in it, and it is the breath of the Vedas. It stands beyond all qualities, matchless, and is also their treasury.

Tulsidas advises: treat the tongue as the threshold of a house and set the jewel lamp of Ram's name on it. In his image, a lamp on the threshold lights both the inside and the outside.

Tulsidas says that in the Kali age neither ritual, devotion nor discernment can be counted on, and Ram's name is the one support. He likens Kali to the deceitful Kalanemi and the Name to wise and able Hanuman.

Bharadwaj asks: is the prince of Avadh that same Ram whom Shiv, the foe of Tripura, repeats in his japa, or is that someone else? He calls Yajnavalkya the home of truth, knower of all, and begs a considered answer.

Seeing Ram in the forest, Shiv's heart filled with joy. He gazed his fill but, judging the moment wrong, did not make himself known, only said victory to the one who is being, awareness and bliss, and walked on. Going along with Sati, he thrilled again and again.
Sati's doubt · doha 50
जो ब्रह्म हर जगह है, अजन्मा है, जिसके अंश नहीं, जिसे वेद भी नहीं जान पाते, क्या वह देह लेकर मनुष्य बन सकता है?Seeing Shiv bow this way to a prince, Sati reasons to herself. The Brahman that is everywhere, unborn, without parts, that even the Vedas do not know: can that take a body and become a man?

Ram saw that this was Sati and not Sita. He joined his hands, named himself along with his father, and asked where Shiv of the bull banner was and why she was wandering the forest alone.

Shiv bowed his head at the Lord's feet, remembered Ram, and the decision came to him there: in this body, no more meeting with Sati as husband and wife. The vow stayed in his own mind and he told no one.

Sati tells the assembly: Mahesh is the soul and father of the world, and my foolish father reviles him. This body came from Daksha, so with Shiv held in my heart I give it up now. With that she left her body through the fire of yoga, and a cry of grief rose across the whole yajna.

The arrows of Kama, perched on a mango branch, struck Shiv's heart, his samadhi broke and he woke. The groom Shiv has the moon on his brow, Ganga on his head, three eyes, a snake for a sacred thread, poison in his throat and a garland of skulls on his chest. The dress looks unlucky, the poet says, yet he is the very home of good. Uma speaks gently to her mother Mena, distraught at the sight of the groom. If a mad husband is what her karma holds, she says, no one is to blame. What the Creator has marked is not a mother's to erase, so Mena should not take needless blame on herself.

Before starting the story Shiv turns to the Ram who plays as a child in Dashrath's courtyard. Shiv tells Uma he can give the cause only as far as he understands it. Invocation and the poet's request
Before the story begins, Tulsidas bows to Vani, Vinayak, Bhavani, Shankar, his guru, Sita and Ram. He then salutes everyone in turn, from brahmins and saints to the wicked, the gods, Ayodhya, Dashrath's family and Hanuman, and folds his hands to the whole world as filled with Sita and Ram.
He says he is no poet and his verse has no merit but one: it carries Ram's name and fame.
The greatness of the Name
Tulsidas calls Ram's name the source of fire, sun and moon. Name and form both belong to the Lord, but in his view the Name is greater than both formless Brahman and Ram in form, since what Ram did for a few, one at a time, the Name carries to countless people.
He cites Shiv, Narad, Prahlad, Dhruv and Hanuman, and says that Ram himself could not finish praising the Name.
Where the Manas came from
Tulsidas explains that Shiv composed this story, told it to Uma and gave it to Kag Bhusundi. From him it reached Yajnavalkya, who told it to Bharadwaj. Tulsidas himself heard it again and again from his guru at Sukarkhet as a child, and resolved to put it in the common tongue to settle his own mind.
He began it at Ayodhya on the ninth of Chaitra, a Tuesday, in samvat 1631. It is called Ramcharitmanas because Shiv kept it in his manas, his heart. Tulsidas describes it as a lake with four dialogues for its four ghats and seven sopans for its steps, and from this lake flows the Sarayu of his poetry.
Bharadwaj and Yajnavalkya
At Prayag, in the Makar season of Magh, sages gathered to bathe and to talk of Hari at Bharadwaj's ashram. One year, after the bathing, Bharadwaj held Yajnavalkya back and shyly laid out his doubt: is the Ram that Shiv repeats the prince of Avadh, or someone else?
Yajnavalkya smiled. You are a devotee of Ram, he said, and ask this though you know. Bhavani once had this same doubt, and he began to tell that story.
Sati's doubt
In the Treta age Shiv went with Sati to the sage Kumbhaj, heard the story of Ram, and set off home. At that time Ram, keeping his father's word, was in the Dandak forest. Ravan had carried Sita off by a trick, and Ram and his brother were searching the woods for her.
Shiv saw him, saluted him with victory to the one who is being, awareness and bliss, and passed on without making himself known. Sati was puzzled that Shiv, whom the world worships, should bow to a prince. Shiv told her that this was his own chosen Lord, and when that did not settle in her mind, he said: go and test him.
Sati in Sita's form
Sati took Sita's form and walked along the path Ram was taking. Lakshman was amazed but said nothing. Ram joined his hands, gave his name and his father's, and asked where Shiv was.
Abashed and afraid, Sati turned back, and Ram then showed something of his power. She saw Ram, Lakshman and Sita ahead of her and behind her too, and on every side many Shivs, Brahmas and Vishnus serving him. When she opened her eyes again there was no one there.
Shiv's silent resolve
Shiv asked how she had tested Ram. Out of fear Sati hid it and said she had only bowed, as he had. Shiv saw all of it in meditation. Since Sati had put on Sita's guise, he resolved in his heart that in this body there would be no more union with her as wife.
A voice from the sky praised his devotion, but even when Sati asked, Shiv did not tell her his vow. Reaching Kailash, he sat beneath the banyan in unbroken samadhi. Sati grieved in silence and prayed that this body might soon fall away. Eighty-seven thousand years passed before Shiv came out of samadhi.
Daksha's yajna and Sati's end
When Brahma made Daksha chief of the Prajapatis, great pride took hold of him. He held a great yajna and invited all the gods, but not Shiv. Seeing the aerial cars pass overhead, Sati asked leave to go to her father's house. Shiv advised against going uninvited, but she would not be held back, and he sent her with his chief ganas.
There Daksha did not so much as ask after her, and she could see no share set aside for Shiv. Sati protested in the assembly against the slander of Shiv and gave up her body through the fire of yoga. As she went she asked one boon of Hari: love for Shiv's feet in birth after birth. Afterwards Virabhadra, sent by Shiv, brought the yajna to ruin.
Parvati's birth and Narad's word
Sati was born as Parvati in the house of Himalaya, and good things filled the mountain. When Narad came, Himvan asked about his daughter's future. Narad listed her virtues and said she would have a husband who is a yogi, matted-haired and unclothed. Her parents grieved, while Uma was glad at heart, and love for Shiv's feet rose in her.
Narad explained that none of this is a flaw in Shiv, since no fault clings to the truly able. Shiv is hard to win yet quick to be pleased, so Uma should do tapas. Mena stayed anxious, and Himvan steadied her.
Parvati's tapas
When Mena went to her daughter, Uma said that a fair brahmin in a dream had told her to do tapas. She reasoned with her parents at length and set out gladly for tapas, the family was distraught, and the sage Vedashira came and calmed them all. Uma went to the forest.
For a thousand years she ate roots and fruit, for a hundred years greens, then for some days only water and air, then hard fasts. For three thousand years she lived on dry bel leaves fallen to the ground, and at last she gave those up too, and so was called Aparna.
Then Brahma's voice came from the sky: your wish is fulfilled. When your father calls, go home, and when the Saptarishis meet you, take that as proof of these words.
The Saptarishis test her
After Sati left her body, Shiv wandered detached, repeating Ram's name. Then Ram appeared, praised his vow, told him Parvati's story and asked him, as a request, to marry her. Shiv took this as a command and sent the Saptarishis to test Parvati's love.
The Saptarishis called Narad's counsel a trick, described Shiv as homeless and ill-dressed, and offered to find her a groom like Vishnu. Parvati laughed. Gold too comes from stone, she said, and does not change its nature in the fire. I will not leave Narad's word. The sages hailed her as Jagadamba, bowed, sent Himvan to bring her home, and told Shiv everything.
Kama and Shiv's samadhi
At that time the asura Tarak conquered every world and the gods lost to him. Brahma said that a son of Shiv would end him, and advised sending Kama to break the samadhi. Kama knew that opposing Shiv would cost him dearly, but he went, accepting it for the good of others.
For two ghadis the whole world fell under his sway, but the moment he reached Shiv all returned to normal. He conjured spring, and still the samadhi did not move. At last he loosed his arrows from a mango branch. Shiv woke, his third eye opened, and Kama was reduced to ash.
Rati came weeping to Shiv. Shiv said that Kama would now pervade all beings without a body, and would meet her again as Krishna's son. Then the gods prayed for the wedding, and Shiv agreed.
Shiv's procession and wedding
The Saptarishis told Parvati that Shiv had burned Kama, so her vow had come to nothing. She smiled and said that Shiv has always been a yogi, and that snow cannot last beside fire. The wedding letter went out and the gods began to dress.
The ganas adorned Shiv with snakes, ash and a lion skin. Vishnu laughed, called the lords of the directions and told them to walk apart with their own parties, or they would be mocked in a stranger's town alongside this groom. Then came a strange procession of bhutas, pretas and ganas. The town's children ran home frightened, and when Mena saw the groom she grieved and set her heart against the wedding.
Uma reasoned gently with her mother, but the women went on grieving. Narad told everyone that Uma is Jagadamba, who was Sati before, and then all sorrow was gone. There was a feast, the sages had the wedding performed by Vedic rite, Himvan gave his daughter to Shiv, and Mena bade her farewell. On Kailash a six-faced son was born to Shiv and Parvati, who ended Tarak in battle. Tulsidas says that good follows those who tell and sing of this wedding.
Uma asks on Kailash
Hearing the story of Shiv, Bharadwaj was overcome with feeling. Yajnavalkya said he had told Shiv's story first to test him, and would now tell Ram's play.
On Kailash Shiv sat beneath a vast banyan. Parvati, choosing her moment, came and was given a seat at his side, and begged him to remove her ignorance. She asked how a king's son could be Brahman and why the formless took form, and then wished to hear everything, from Ram's birth, childhood and marriage to the exile, the end of Ravan, his reign and his going home.
Shiv's answer
Hearing Uma's questions, Shiv stayed sunk in meditation for two dandas. Then he bowed to the child Ram and praised Uma, saying her asking would do the world good. One thing displeased him: the suggestion that the Ram the sages meditate on is someone else. He explained that form and formless differ no more than water and hail, and that the one the Vedas describe is Dashrath's son.
At this Uma's confusion lifted. She asked humbly why Brahman took a human body. Shiv was pleased, told her that this same story was told by Bhusundi to Garud, and said that whenever dharma declines, the Lord takes birth. From here he goes on to give the reasons for Ram's births in different kalpas.
Why the Lord takes birth
Shiv tells Parvati that no single fixed reason can be given for Ram's coming. Yet whenever dharma declines, the proud and the asuras grow, and brahmins, cows, gods and the earth suffer, the Lord takes one body or another and removes the pain of the good.
He then lists causes from earlier kalpas. Hari's doorkeepers Jay and Vijay, cursed by brahmins, were asuras for three births, from Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu to Ravan and Kumbhakaran. In one kalpa the vow of Jalandhar's faithful wife was broken by a trick, and Hari accepted her curse. In another the cause was a curse from Narad, and Parvati was astonished to hear it.
Narad's pride and his curse
Narad sat in deep meditation by the Ganga near a cave in the Himalaya. A worried Indra sent Kama, but none of Kama's arts touched him. Narad felt no anger, but he grew proud of having conquered desire. Shiv asked him not to tell this to Hari, yet Narad went to the Ocean of Milk and told everything.
Hari saw the pride that had sprouted in him and, through maya, made a city appear on the road. There King Shilnidhi's daughter Vishwamohini was to choose a husband. Seeing the signs on her, Narad longed to win her and asked Hari for Hari's form. Hari promised to do only what would serve Narad's good, and gave him a form Narad himself could not see. To the princess his face looked like a monkey's. She garlanded Hari, who had come in the guise of a king.
Two of Shiv's attendants mocked Narad and told him to look at his face in a mirror. He saw it in water, cursed them to become rakshasas, and then cursed Hari, whom he met on the road: take that same human body, monkeys will be your helpers, and you will know the pain of parting from your wife. Hari accepted the curse and withdrew his maya, and Narad saw his mistake. Hari told him to chant Shankar's hundred names, and Narad left for Satyalok singing Ram's praise. He told the attendants they would find release at the hands of Hari in human form. This was the cause of the avatar in one kalpa.
A story without end
Having given these causes, Shiv tells Parvati that the Lord descends in kalpa after kalpa and that sages sing each telling afresh, so the wise are not surprised by differing accounts. No god, human or sage has escaped being deluded by maya. He then turns to one more cause.
Manu and Shatarupa
From Swayambhu Manu and his wife Shatarupa came the human race. After ruling for a long time, Manu grieved that his life had passed without devotion to Hari. He gave the kingdom to his son and the two went to Naimish, where they settled on the bank of the Dhenumati to practise tapas and chant.
First they ate greens, fruit and roots, then lived on water alone, then on air. For ten thousand years they stood on one foot. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiv came many times offering boons, but they would not be moved. At last a voice from the sky told them to ask for a boon, and at its sound their bodies were well again.
Manu asked to see the form that lives in Shiv's mind, and the Lord appeared with Sita. Neither could look away. Hesitantly Manu asked for a son like the Lord. The Lord replied: where would I go to look for my equal? I myself will be your son. Shatarupa asked for the joy and understanding his devotees have. Manu also asked to love the Lord's feet as a father loves a son, his life resting on the Lord as a fish's rests on water. The Lord said that Manu would become king of Avadh, and that he would appear there with his portions and the primal Shakti.
King Pratapbhanu
King Satyaketu of Kekaya had two sons, Pratapbhanu and Arimardan. With his wise minister Dharmaruchi, Pratapbhanu won the seven continents and ruled by dharma. He gave many gifts and performed many yajnas without wanting any reward, offering all his actions to Vasudev. Once while hunting he chased a boar far into the deep Vindhya forest. The boar was really the rakshasa Kalketu. Hungry, thirsty and lost, the king reached the hermitage of a hermit, in truth a king he had defeated, now living in disguise. The hermit knew him, but he did not know the hermit. With sweet words the hermit won his trust.
The king asked never to know old age or death, never to lose a battle, and to rule alone for a hundred kalpas. The false hermit told him that only the anger of brahmins could undo him, so he should win them over: for a year, feed a hundred thousand brahmins and their families every day, with the hermit himself cooking. That night Kalketu carried the sleeping king back to his palace, hid the royal priest in a mountain cave, and took the priest's place.
On the day of the feast he cooked by maya, and into the meat of many animals he mixed brahmin flesh. As soon as serving began a voice from the sky warned the brahmins not to eat and to go home, and they all rose. Without pausing to think they said in anger that the king should become a rakshasa with all his family, and that his line should end within a year. The voice then said that the king was not at fault. The brahmins told him that what is destined cannot be turned aside and the curse could not now be changed. Stirred up by the false hermit, other kings besieged the city. Pratapbhanu and Arimardan fell in battle and Satyaketu's line came to an end.
The rise of Ravan
When the time came, that same king became Ravan, with ten heads and twenty arms. Arimardan became Kumbhakaran, and the minister Dharmaruchi became their younger half-brother Vibhishan, a devotee of Vishnu. The king's servants and sons became fearsome rakshasas.
The three brothers practised severe tapas. Ravan asked to die at no one's hands except those of monkeys and men. Prompted by Saraswati, Kumbhakaran asked for six months of sleep, and Vibhishan asked for pure love at the Lord's feet. The danav Maya gave his daughter Mandodari to Ravan. Ravan took over Lanka on Mount Trikuta in the middle of the ocean, won the Pushpak from Kuber, and playfully lifted Kailash to test his strength.
He ordered his rakshasas to disrupt brahmin feasts, yajnas, homas and shraddhas, so that the gods would grow weak with hunger and come to him. Meghnad defeated the gods. Ravan went around the world bringing the guardians of the directions, the sun, the moon, the wind and Varun under his rule, and married many women he had won by force of arms.
The earth's cry and the gods' prayer
Dharma vanished everywhere. At the very mention of chanting, yoga, tapas or yajna Ravan rushed out himself to stop it. The earth took the form of a cow and went weeping to the gods and sages, but they could do nothing. Together they took her to Brahma's realm. Brahma said this was beyond his power and told her to keep her courage and remember Hari's feet.
The gods began to ask where to find the Lord. Some said Vaikunth, others the Ocean of Milk. Then Shiv, sitting among them, said that Hari is everywhere and appears through love. Brahma praised this and, with folded hands, offered his prayer.
A deep voice then came from the sky: do not fear, I will come in the line of the Sun as four brothers in the house of Dashrath and Kaushalya, and I will make Narad's word true. Brahma told the gods to take monkey bodies, go to earth and serve Hari. They spread out over the forests and mountains and waited for the Lord.
Dashrath's wish and Shringi's yajna
King Dashrath of Avadh, a man of dharma, and his queens led by Kaushalya lived in devotion to Hari. One day the king grieved at having no son and went to his guru Vashishth, who comforted him and said he would have four sons.
At Vashishth's call the sage Shringi performed the yajna for a son. Agni appeared with the charu in his hands and told the king to go and share it out as fitting. The king gave half to Kaushalya and half of the rest to Kaikeyi, and what remained he split in two and gave to Sumitra through the hands of Kaushalya and Kaikeyi. All three queens conceived, and joy spread through the worlds.
The birth of Ram
When yoga, lagna, planets, weekday and tithi were all favourable, on the bright ninth of Madhu month, at midday in the Abhijit hour, the Lord appeared. A cool fragrant breeze blew, the rivers ran with nectar, and the gods showered flowers from their vimanas.
The Lord stood before Kaushalya in his four-armed form. The mother prayed with folded hands and asked him to leave that form and play as a child. Then he became a baby and began to cry. At the sound the queens and maids came running and Dashrath was lost in joy. Vashishth was summoned, the birth rites were done and the king gave rich gifts to the brahmins.
Kaikeyi and Sumitra also bore beautiful sons. All of Avadh was swept up in celebration. Tulsidas says that even the Sun stopped to watch, so that a month became a single day. Shiv adds that he and Kakbhushundi wandered the streets in human form and no one recognised them.
The naming and early childhood
After some days the king called Guru Vashishth and asked him to name the children. Vashishth named the four brothers Ram, Bharat, Shatrughan and Lakshman. From infancy Lakshman loved Ram's feet, and Bharat and Shatrughan shared a bond like that of master and servant.
For Kaushalya the days and nights slipped by unnoticed. Sometimes she held Ram in her lap, sometimes she rocked him in the cradle. Tulsidas says that the Brahman who is without attributes and beyond the senses lay in Kaushalya's lap, won over by love and devotion.
Kaushalya sees the vast form
One day Kaushalya bathed Ram, laid him in the cradle, worshipped the family deity and went to the kitchen. When she came back she saw the child sitting at the place of worship, eating the offering. She hurried to the cradle and found him sleeping there too. Seeing the same child in two places, she began to tremble.
The Lord smiled and showed her his undivided form, with countless universes in every pore. Kaushalya saw time, karma, the gunas and maya there too. She stood with folded hands and could not speak. Then he became a child again and asked her never to tell anyone.
In time the four brothers had their first haircut ceremony. Kaushalya would call Ram to eat as he ran about the courtyard, and he would run away. When Dashrath called he would not leave his friends, and he came covered in dust to sit in the king's lap. After the sacred thread they went to the guru's house and quickly learned everything. Now they hunted in the forest with brothers and friends, listened to the Vedas and Puranas, and each morning bowed to mother, father and guru before seeing to the work of the city.
Vishwamitra comes for Ram
The great sage Vishwamitra lived in his hermitage in the forest. Marich and Subahu kept disrupting his yajnas. The sage reasoned that only Hari could end them and that the Lord had come down to lift the earth's burden, so he could use this as a reason to see him. He bathed in the Sarayu and went to Dashrath's court.
The king received him with great honour. Vishwamitra saw the four sons and on seeing Ram's face forgot himself. Then he asked for Ram along with Lakshman. The king's heart shook. Take land, wealth, everything, he said, but giving up Ram is beyond me. Vashishth reasoned with him at length until his doubt cleared, and he blessed his sons and handed them to the sage.
Tadaka and the guarding of the yajna
On the way the sage pointed towards Tadaka, and she rushed at them in anger. With one arrow Ram ended her life and, seeing her as helpless, gave her a place in his own abode. The sage gave the Lord a knowledge that keeps hunger and thirst away and keeps the body strong and radiant, and he handed over all his weapons.
In the morning Ram told the sage to carry on the yajna without fear and stood guard himself. When Marich came, an arrow without a head flung him a hundred yojanas across the sea. Subahu was ended by a fire arrow, and Lakshman defeated the rakshasa army. The gods and sages sang their praise.
Ahalya is freed
After some days there the sage spoke of a bow ceremony, and Ram set out with him. On the road they came to an empty hermitage with no living creature. Seeing a stone there Ram asked about it, and the sage told him that this was Gautam's wife, who by a curse had taken a body of stone and was waiting patiently for the dust of Ram's feet.
At the touch of Ram's feet Ahalya appeared and stood with folded hands. In her praise she said the sage's curse had turned into grace, since through it she had seen Hari. She asked only that her mind stay at his feet. Falling at his feet again and again, she left full of joy for her husband's realm. Tulsidas tells himself to give up deceit and worship such a Lord, who is kind without any cause.
Reaching Janakpur and meeting Janak
After Ahalya's release, Ram and Lakshman came with the sages to the Ganga. Vishwamitra told how the river came to earth, everyone bathed, and the brahmins received gifts. Soon they neared the city of Videha. Gardens ringed the town, the markets were fine and Janak's palace was a marvel.
Vishwamitra stopped in a mango grove. Hearing of it, Janak came to meet him with ministers, warriors, brahmins and his guru. Just then the two brothers returned from seeing the garden, and everyone rose. Janak was lost in love and asked the sage who these boys were. Vishwamitra said they were Dashrath's sons, who had guarded his yajna and defeated the asuras in battle. Janak lodged them in a fine residence.
Seeing the town
Lakshman wanted to see the city but was too shy to say so. Ram understood and asked the guru's leave. As the brothers walked out, children joined them and people dropped their work and ran to look. Women at their windows said to each other that this was the groom fit for Sita, yet Janak's vow and Shiv's hard bow worried them. One said that he whose foot dust freed Ahalya would surely break the bow.
In the east of the city the children showed them the ground and platforms made for the bow ceremony. Seeing it was getting late, Ram went back to the guru. At night the brothers pressed the guru's feet. At dawn Lakshman rose at the call of the cock, and Ram woke before the guru.
The flower garden
The brothers went to the king's garden to gather flowers for the guru's worship. At that same time Sita came there with her friends, sent by her mother to worship Girija. After bathing and worship she asked for a groom suited to her. One friend saw the brothers in the garden and ran to tell the others. Sita remembered Narad's words and went to look.
Hearing the anklets, Ram turned, and his gaze rested on Sita's face. He told Lakshman that this was Janak's daughter and that his heart was stirred, though a Raghu's mind never takes a wrong path. Sita saw Ram from behind the vines, closed her eyes and held him in her heart. Then she remembered her father's vow and grew sad. Seeing it was late, she turned back.
In the temple she prayed to Bhavani. The image smiled, its garland slipped, and Gauri blessed her, saying the one her heart had chosen would be hers. Sita went home happy. Ram told the guru everything plainly, and the guru blessed them both.
The moon and the dawn
At evening the moon rose in the east and reminded Ram of Sita's face, and then he reflected that a stained moon could not equal it. In the morning Lakshman said that just as stars fade at sunrise, the kings had lost their strength at Ram's coming. Then Shatanand arrived, sent by Janak to call them.
The bow assembly
The brothers came to the arena with Vishwamitra, and the whole city poured in to watch. Janak seated everyone in proper order. Each person saw Ram according to his own heart. Warriors saw a hero, crooked kings a fearsome figure, townspeople a beautiful one, yogis the calm reality, and Janak's family someone dear. Janak seated the sage and the two brothers on a platform finer and wider than all the rest.
Talk spread among the kings. Some said Ram would break the bow, some boasted, and the righteous kings advised them. Then Sita came with her friends at Janak's call, and the gods rained flowers. She saw the two brothers by the sage and, out of modesty, kept Ram in her heart and looked towards her friends. Everyone silently wished that she might marry Ram.
The kings fail and Janak despairs
The bards announced Janak's vow that whoever broke the bow would win Sita along with victory over the three worlds. The kings rose but the bow did not stir. Ten thousand of them tried at once and still it stayed where it was, and they sat down beaten.
Janak, distressed, said he now knew the earth held no heroes and that the kings should go home. All were saddened and Lakshman filled with anger. Bowing at Ram's feet, he said such words were improper while a Raghu was present, and that by Ram's glory he could break this bow. Ram calmed him with a sign.
The breaking of the bow
Vishwamitra saw that the time was right and told Ram to rise. Ram stood up without elation or sorrow, touched the guru's feet and walked with an elephant's gait. Sita's mother told her friends she worried how so tender a boy could lift this bow, and a friend replied that a radiant person must not be thought small. Sita prayed silently to the gods.
Lakshman told the elephants of the quarters and the tortoise to hold the earth steady. Ram saw Sita's distress, bowed to the guru in his mind and lifted the bow with ease. No one saw him string or draw it. In that instant it broke in the middle and the sound filled the worlds. Ram put both pieces down on the ground and cries of victory rose on all sides.
The victory garland
Music rang through the city and everyone was lost in joy. At Shatanand's word, Sita came to Ram with her friends. Seeing him she stood still as a painting. When a friend prompted her, she lifted the garland and placed it on Ram. Her friends told her to touch his feet, but remembering what had happened to Ahalya she did not, and Ram smiled inwardly.
The coming of Parshuram
Some crooked kings talked of seizing Sita, and the good kings restrained them. Just then, hearing of the broken bow, Parshuram arrived. The kings grew afraid and bowed. Janak had Sita bow to him, and Vishwamitra brought the two brothers to his feet. Seeing the broken bow, Parshuram grew angry and demanded the name of the one who broke it.
Ram said humbly that whoever broke it must be some servant of his. Lakshman laughed and said many such bows had been broken in childhood, so why this attachment to one. Sharp words went back and forth. Parshuram showed his axe and spoke of his old wars, and Lakshman answered with mockery. Vishwamitra asked for pardon, and Ram calmed him again and again with cool words.
Ram said they could not be equals even in name, and explained with humility that the Raghus do not fear battle but do honour a brahmin. At these words the veil lifted from Parshuram's mind. He offered Ram his bow and it went to Ram of itself. Then he knew Ram's greatness, hailed him, asked forgiveness and left for the forest to do tapas.
The messengers in Ayodhya
Janak asked Vishwamitra what should come next. The sage said the marriage had rested on the bow and was already done, yet Dashrath should be called so the family's rites could be kept. Messengers were sent, and a wonderful pavilion rose in the city.
The messengers gave Dashrath the letter, and reading it moved him deeply. Bharat and Shatrughan came in from their play and asked after Ram and Lakshman. The messengers told the full story of the svayamvar and the broken bow. Vashishth said that happiness comes of itself to the righteous, and told him to prepare the wedding party. The queens heard and gave gifts, and all Ayodhya was decorated.
The journey of the wedding party
Bharat prepared horses and riders. Chariots, elephants and palanquins were arrayed, and brahmins, bards and servants all went along. Dashrath seated Vashishth in a chariot and mounted his own. Good omens appeared on the road. Janak had bridges built over the rivers and rest places made ready. People came out of the city with gifts to welcome them, and the two parties met. Sita, by her own power, sent the siddhis to the guest quarters, and the party marvelled at finding every comfort there.
Father and sons reunited
When they heard their father had come, the two brothers were too shy to say anything to the guru. Vishwamitra took them to the guest quarters. Dashrath bowed to the sage, held his sons to his chest and forgot all his pain. Bharat and Shatrughan met Ram. The people of the city talked of Ram and Sita as a pair and were happy to see the beauty of the four brothers.
The wedding
The wedding day came in the month of Aghan. The lagna Brahma had worked out reached Janak through Narad and agreed with the reckoning of his astrologers. At the hour of cow dust, Shatanand went to call the party. Shiv, Brahma and other gods came in their aerial cars, and Shiv told them to set aside their wonder. Ram rode out on a horse. The queens performed the welcome rite, and the gods sat disguised as brahmins, watching.
Janak worshipped the sages and Dashrath. Sita came to the pavilion with her friends, and Janak and Sunayana washed Ram's feet. The gurus recited the lineages, the hands were joined and Janak gave his daughter away. Then came the rounds, and Ram placed sindoor on Sita's head.
After this, at Vashishth's word, Janak married Kushketu's daughter Mandavi to Bharat, Sita's younger sister Urmila to Lakshman, and Shrutakirti to Shatrughan. Seeing his four sons with their brides, Dashrath was as glad as if he had gained the four fruits of life.
After the wedding in Janakpur
Janak gave a huge dowry and humbly asked Dashrath to look after his daughters as servants. The grooms and brides were brought to the kohabar room, where the women played their merry customs. Then Janak fed the wedding party, with teasing songs sung over the meal. Next day Dashrath asked his guru to call the brahmins for a gift of cows. Vamadev, Valmiki, Jabali, Kaushik and other sages came. Dashrath worshipped them, gave the brahmins four lakh cows and gave gifts to the seekers as well.
Many days passed, with fresh honours each day. Out of love, Janak would not let Dashrath leave. In the end Vishwamitra and Shatanand persuaded him to give Dashrath leave.
The farewell
Hearing the party would leave, the whole city was distressed. The queens took Sita and her sisters in their laps and taught them to serve husbands and elders. The four brothers came to ask leave. Sita's mother entrusted Sita to Ram with a plea and could say no more.
Even the parrots and mynas Sita had raised grew restless and called for her. Janak, known as a great renunciate, lost his composure at the sight of her and held her close. Ministers counselled him, and the daughters were seated in palanquins. The party set out. Janak came a long way with them, praised Dashrath, the sages and Ram, and asked Ram that his mind might stay at Ram's feet. Then he turned back.
Welcome in Ayodhya
When the news came, the people of Ayodhya decorated houses, markets and lanes. Sumitra arranged the auspicious offerings, and Kaushalya and the other mothers went out for the welcome rite. At the palace gate the mothers waved lamps, were lost in bliss at seeing their sons with their brides, seated them on thrones and washed their feet.
Dashrath honoured the guru, the brahmins and Vishwamitra and told Vishwamitra there was no one as fortunate as himself. At night he told the queens that the brides were still young girls and should be cared for like the eyes under their lids. The mothers asked Ram about Tadaka, Marich and Subahu, and said themselves that it had all come by the sage's grace. Ram answered with humble words and set them at ease. All slept, and in the morning the four brothers bathed and came to their father.
Vishwamitra leaves and the poet closes
On a good day the wedding bracelets were untied. Each day brought new festivity in Ayodhya. Vishwamitra wished to go but stayed on out of Ram's love. At last Dashrath, with his sons and queens, fell at his feet and said the family was his own. The sage blessed them and left, and Ram went some way with him before returning.
Vamadev and Vashishth spoke of Vishwamitra's greatness. Tulsidas says he has told this story to make his speech pure. He says that for those who lovingly sing and hear of this wedding there is always gladness. Here Bal Kand ends.

No classical text ties Bal Kand to any one graha. Shri Ram belongs to the solar line and his worship is often linked with the Sun, and Jupiter signifies scripture and dharma. So a Sun or Jupiter dasha, or a chart whose ninth house (dharma) seems to call for attention, is a natural time for a regular reading of the Manas. How these grahas and this house stand in your kundli and which dasha is running can be seen by building your kundli on this site.
