The Shri Kanakadhara Stotram, the 'hymn of the stream of gold', is a Sanskrit hymn of eighteen shlokas to Lakshmi, traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya; the Gita Press copy, too, closes by calling it the work of Shri Shankaracharya. It is told that the young Shankara, still a brahmachari going from house to house for bhiksha, came to the door of a poor brahmin. There was no food in the house; the brahmin's wife had only a single amla (Indian gooseberry), and, embarrassed, she placed that in his bowl. Moved by her gift, Shankara sang this hymn to Lakshmi on her behalf, and the story goes that golden amlas rained down on the house, which is why the hymn is called Kanakadhara.

Today it is read above all in times of poverty, debt and money trouble, and in the hope of Lakshmi's steady grace in the home: on Fridays, at the Diwali Lakshmi puja, on Dhanteras and on Akshaya Tritiya. Its first nine shlokas dwell on one scene, Lakshmi's glance falling on Vishnu, and ask that the grace of that same glance reach the reader too. This page gives the full text as printed in the Gita Press, Gorakhpur Devi Stotra Ratnakar, a plain meaning under every shloka that explains each of Lakshmi's names and each image, and, after sign-in, a free PDF of the whole text.

Shloka 1

The playful sidelong glance (apanga) of Lakshmi, the goddess of all that is auspicious (Mangaladevata), settles on Hari's body as a female bee settles on a tamala tree laden with buds: his dark body bristles with the thrill of joy (pulaka), like the tamala with its buds. May that glance, which holds all splendour (vibhuti) within it, bring blessing to me.

Shloka 2

Again and again Lakshmi's innocent (mugdha) glances go to the face of Murari (Vishnu, slayer of the demon Mura) and come back, sent forward by love and drawn back by shyness (trapa), like a female bee (madhukari) hovering about a great blue lotus (mahotpala). May that garland of glances of the ocean-born one (Sagarasambhava) grant me prosperity (shri).

Shloka 3

May Indira's (Lakshmi's) half-glance (ikshanardha) rest on me too, for a moment, even a little. It is lovely as the heart of a blue lily (indivara); it gives great joy even to Vishnu, the foe of Mura; and it has the power to bestow the splendour (vibhrama) of the seat of Indra, king of all the gods.

Shloka 4

May the eye of the beloved of the serpent-reclining Lord (Bhujangashaya, Vishnu on Shesha) be for my prosperity (bhuti): the eye that fills with joy on finding Mukunda (Vishnu), the root of bliss (anandakanda), whose own eyes are half closed in delight. It gazes at him without blinking (animesha), held in the sway of Ananga, the bodiless god of love, its pupil (kaninika) and lashes (pakshma) fixed in a half-shut, sidelong look (akekara).

Shloka 5

On the chest of Madhujit (Vishnu, conqueror of the demon Madhu), between his arms where the Kaustubha gem rests, the garland of glances of the lotus-dweller (Kamalalaya) shines like a necklace of sapphires (harinila, the blue indranila gem). May that garland of glances, which fulfils the desire even of the Lord himself, bring me welfare.

Shloka 6

Vishnu, the foe of the demon Kaitabha (Kaitabhari), has a chest dark and lovely as a bank of black clouds; on that rain-cloud (dharadhara) she flashes like lightning. May that revered form of the mother of all the worlds, born as the daughter of the sage Bhrigu (Bhargavanandana), grant me all good things (bhadra).

Shloka 7

It is said (kila) that through its power Manmatha, the god of love, first gained a foothold in Madhumathin (Vishnu, slayer of Madhu), the home of all auspiciousness. May that slow (manthara), soft and languid half-glance of the daughter of the ocean (Makaralaya-kanyaka; the ocean is the home of the makaras) fall here on me as well.

Shloka 8

Here the eye of Narayana's beloved (Narayana-pranayini) is a rain-cloud (ambuvaha), carried along by the kind breeze of compassion (daya-anupavana). May that cloud drive the scorching heat (gharma) of my wrong deeds far away for a long time, and pour a stream of the water of wealth (dravina) on me, a forlorn (vishanna) fledgling bird with nothing to my name (akinchana).

Shloka 9

May the glance of the lotus-seated one (Pushkaravishtara), bright as the heart of a lotus in full bloom, bring about for me the nourishment and growth (pushti) I long for. It is by the favour of that glance, moist with compassion (dayardra), that even people of the finest minds easily reach the station of heaven (trivishtapa).

Shloka 10

Salutation to her, the youthful consort (taruni) of Vishnu, the one guru of the three worlds, who in the play (keli) of creation, preservation and dissolution takes her place as the goddess of speech (Girdevata, Saraswati), as the beauty of Garudadhvaja (Vishnu, whose banner bears Garuda), as Shakambhari (the goddess who fed the world with greens in a famine), and as the beloved of the moon-crested Shiva (Shashishekhara).

Shloka 11

Salutation to her as Shruti, the Veda, who brings forth the fruit of good deeds; salutation to her as Rati, delight, an ocean of lovely qualities; salutation to her as Shakti, power, who dwells in the hundred-petalled lotus (shatapatra); salutation to her as Pushti, nourishment, the beloved of Purushottama (Vishnu).

Shloka 12

Salutation to her whose face is like a lotus (nalika); salutation to her who is Fortune (bhuti) born of the ocean of milk; salutation to the sister (sodara) of the moon (Soma) and of amrita, the nectar, for all three rose from the churning of the ocean; salutation to the beloved of Narayana.

Shloka 13

O lotus-eyed (Saroruhakshi), O revered (manye) Mother: bowing to you brings wealth, delights all the senses, has the power to bestow a kingdom, and stands ready to carry away sin (durita). May those salutations keep hold of me, of me above all, night and day (anisham); that is, may I never cease to bow to you.

Shloka 14

O queen of Murari's heart (Murari-hridayeshvari), I worship you with speech, body and mind. Worship done to win your side-glance (kataksha) spreads every kind of good and wealth (sakala-artha-sampad) through the life of the one who serves you.

Shloka 15

O you who dwell in the lotus (Sarasijanilaya), lotus in hand (Sarojahasta), radiant in the whitest garments (dhavalatama amshuka), with fragrance (gandha) and garlands; O Bhagavati, beloved of Hari, lovely one (manojna), giver of prosperity (bhuti) to the three worlds: be gracious to me.

Shloka 16

In the morning I bow to her whose body is bathed in the pure, lovely water of the heavenly river (svarvahini, the Ganga of heaven), poured from the mouths of golden pitchers by the elephants of the directions (dig-hastin); the mother of the worlds, the wife of the lord of all worlds (Vishnu), the daughter of the ocean of nectar. (This is the well-known Gajalakshmi image.)

Shloka 17

O Kamala, beloved of the lotus-eyed Vishnu (Kamalakshavallabha), look at me with side-glances that ripple with a flood of compassion. Among those who have nothing (akinchana) I stand first; I am a true, unfeigned (akritrima) vessel for your mercy.

Phalashruti 18

Those who praise Rama (Lakshmi), who is made of the three Vedas (trayimayi) and is the mother of the three worlds, with these hymns day after day (anvaham), become rich in virtues on this earth and share in very great fortune, and the wise (budha) hold their minds (ashaya) in esteem.

Where the hymn comes from

The Kanakadhara Stotram is traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, and in the Gita Press Devi Stotra Ratnakar its colophon, too, calls it the work of Shri Shankaracharya. The story of the amla is told in the traditional lives of Shankara (the Shankara-vijaya texts) and is still told in Kerala today. In one popular telling Lakshmi first answers that the family's past deeds hold no wealth for them, and relents only at Shankara's pleading; the eighth shloka, which asks first that the heat of wrong deeds be taken away and then that wealth be rained down, is read in that light.

Printed and sung versions differ in their number of shlokas. The Gita Press copy has 18, and this page follows it. Many editions add a verse to Ganesha at the start ('Vande vandarumandaram...'), add three verses beginning 'Namo'stu' and a few others in the middle or at the end, taking the hymn to 21 or 25 verses, and close with a verse of fruit that calls it the 'Suvarnadhara Stotra'. These added verses are not in this Gita Press copy.

How the hymn is built

The first nine shlokas turn around one scene: Lakshmi's glance falling on Vishnu's face, chest and body. The poet calls it a bee on a tamala tree, a bee hovering by a blue lotus, a necklace of sapphires, lightning flashing in a dark cloud and a cloud that rains, and in every shloka he asks the same grace for himself. Each shloka calls Lakshmi by a new name: Mangaladevata, Sagarasambhava, Indira, Bhujangashayangana, Kamalalaya, Bhargavanandana, Makaralayakanyaka, Narayanapranayini and Pushkaravishtara.

Shlokas 10 to 12 are salutations: Lakshmi is seen also as the goddess of speech, as Shakambhari and as Shiva's beloved, and as Shruti, Rati, Shakti and Pushti. Shlokas 13 to 17 are direct prayers; shloka 16 sets out the Gajalakshmi image, in which the elephants of the directions pour the water of the heavenly Ganga over the goddess from golden pitchers. Shloka 18 is the phalashruti. Thirteen shlokas (1 to 11, 13 and 16) are in the vasantatilaka metre; the other five are each in a different metre.

How to read it

On a Friday or any auspicious day, bathe, put on clean clothes and light a ghee lamp before a picture of Lakshmi, or, if possible, of Lakshmi with Narayana. Offer lotus, rose or yellow flowers, unbroken rice (akshat) and something sweet as prasad; some also offer an amla in memory of the hymn's story. Then read all eighteen shlokas in one sitting.

The shlokas are long and full of images, so the first few times read the meaning of each one alongside, and keep the pronunciation slow and clear. At the end bow to both Lakshmi and Vishnu, since the whole hymn is a praise of Lakshmi's glance resting on Vishnu. Those who want to read it daily should keep to the same hour each day; the phalashruti, too, speaks of praise offered day after day (anvaham).

Meaning and fruit

Though it is a prayer for wealth, the Kanakadhara Stotram does not open with a plain request. It first paints the love of Lakshmi and Vishnu, and then asks that a small share of the glance that delights Vishnu, 'ishat' and 'kshanam', a little and for a moment, fall on the one who prays. The eighth shloka is the heart of it: may the cloud of Lakshmi's eye, driven by the breeze of compassion, first take away the heat of wrong deeds and then rain down wealth; that is, the cleansing of one's deeds is asked for before the grace.

The phalashruti says that those who praise Lakshmi daily with these hymns grow in virtue, share in great fortune and are honoured among the wise; it is worth noticing that it speaks of virtue first and fortune after. By tradition the hymn is read as a support of faith in money trouble, debt and a stalled livelihood. That is the word of tradition, not a promise of any result; the reading does not replace hard work and good sense, it goes alongside them.

In Jyotish, Lakshmi is linked with Venus and Jupiter: Venus signifies comfort, beauty and plenty, Jupiter wealth, good fortune and good judgement. When Venus is debilitated (in Virgo), combust or afflicted by malefics, when Jupiter is debilitated (in Capricorn) or weak, during a Venus or Jupiter mahadasha or antardasha, and when the second house of wealth or the eleventh house of gains is afflicted or their lords sit in the sixth, eighth or twelfth house, tradition gives the reading of the Kanakadhara Stotram with the Friday worship of Lakshmi as a remedy. It is a remedy of faith, not a promise of any result, and it does not replace hard work or careful handling of money. Questions people ask

When should the Kanakadhara Stotram be read?
It can be read on any day, in the morning after bathing or in the evening with a lamp lit. Fridays, Diwali, Dhanteras, Sharad Purnima and Akshaya Tritiya are held to be special. Shloka 16 itself says 'pratar namami', I bow in the morning, so many keep it in their morning worship.
How many times should the Kanakadhara Stotram be read?
One full reading is enough. Some take a vow to read it three times a day, or every day for 21 or 40 days; no count is required. The phalashruti speaks of praise 'anvaham', day after day, so regularity is what matters most.
What are the benefits of reading the Kanakadhara Stotram?
The phalashruti (shloka 18) says that those who praise Lakshmi daily with these hymns grow in virtue, share in great fortune and are honoured among the wise. By tradition it is read in poverty, debt and money trouble, and for Lakshmi's steady grace in the home; in Jyotish it is a remedy for Venus and Jupiter. These are statements of faith, not a promise of any result.
Are there any rules for reading the Kanakadhara Stotram?
There are no hard rules. Bathe, put on clean clothes, light a ghee lamp before a picture of Lakshmi, offer flowers, and read the whole hymn in one sitting with a quiet mind and clear pronunciation. Getting up or talking in the middle of the reading is held to be improper; if the Sanskrit feels hard, read slowly with the meaning.
