The Saraswati Chalisa, also called the Sharada Chalisa, is a Hindi hymn to Saraswati, goddess of learning, speech and intellect. It has two opening dohas, the chaupais, and two closing dohas. The author is not known; the dohas carry the name Ramsagar, taken to be the poet's signature. The Chalisa salutes the four-armed goddess with her veena and swan, credits the learning of Valmiki, Kalidas, Tulsidas and Surdas to her grace, and then tells of the slaying of Madhu and Kaitabh, Chanda and Munda, Raktabeej and Shumbha-Nishumbha, seeing the Mother as Durga too.
Students read it before examinations, writers and speakers for command of speech, and families on Basant Panchami. The text below is transcribed letter for letter from a printed Haridwar booklet, and under every chaupai is a plain meaning so that the sense travels with the recitation. After signing in you can take the whole text as a PDF.

How to read it
After bathing in the morning, sit in a clean, quiet place facing east or north. Keep a picture or image of Saraswati before you, light a lamp, and offer white flowers, rice grains and, if you can, milk or kheer. White clothes and white flowers are held dear to the goddess.
Begin with the dohas, read the chaupais in order with clear pronunciation, and end on the closing dohas. The custom is to chant 'Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah' eleven times before the reading and to do the aarti after it, but the Chalisa by itself is counted a complete recitation.
Students may read it at the study table with their books and pens placed before the goddess. Those with hesitation or a stammer in their speech should read slowly and aloud; the practice itself is part of the benefit.
Meaning and fruit
In the Vedas Saraswati is Vak, the goddess of speech; speech, memory, the arts and discernment are her domain. The Chalisa first bows to her gentle form, the giver of learning to poets like Valmiki, Kalidas, Tulsidas and Surdas, and then sees the same power as Durga, who slew Madhu and Kaitabh, Chanda and Munda, Raktabeej and Shumbha-Nishumbha. The sense is that learning and strength are two faces of one Mother.
The Chalisa names its own fruits: intellect and learning from daily reading, the joy of children, release from danger, poverty and the trouble of spirits, and freedom for a prisoner who reads it a hundred times. In practice people read it for memory, concentration, clear speech and success in examinations.
Its deeper fruit is to come out of one's own darkness, as the closing doha says: the Mother is the sun's radiance, and the devotee, calling himself darkness, asks her for light.
Basant Panchami and the start of learning
Magha Shukla Panchami, Basant Panchami, is the chief day of Saraswati worship. Yellow clothes, yellow flowers and saffron-coloured food belong to the day; books and musical instruments are placed before the goddess, and small children are given their vidyarambh, the writing of their first letters. Reading the Saraswati Chalisa together as a family on that day is ideal.
The panchang on this site shows the next Basant Panchami by itself; no date needs looking up for the Chalisa, which may be read on any day.

In your kundli
In Jyotish the Saraswati Chalisa is the remedy for Mercury and Jupiter. Mercury rules speech, memory, calculation and reasoning; the Chalisa is prescribed when Mercury sits debilitated in Pisces, combust near the Sun, in the sixth, eighth or twelfth house, or during a Mercury mahadasha or antardasha. Jupiter rules learning, knowledge and judgement: when Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn, forms Guru-Chandal yoga with Rahu or Ketu, or when the fifth house (intellect and education) and the second house (speech) are afflicted, this Chalisa is again the text to turn to. Children who cannot settle to study or who stumble in speech are also given it to read. Build your kundli on this site and see where Mercury and Jupiter stand.

On which day should the Saraswati Chalisa be read?
On any day. Basant Panchami is its chief day, and Thursday for learning and Friday for speech and the arts are held favourable. Students read it every morning through examination season.
How many times should it be read?
Once a day is usually enough. The Chalisa itself says that a prisoner who reads it a hundred times is freed, so for a particular vow the custom is a hundred readings, which may be spread over as many days as needed.
What are the benefits of reading the Saraswati Chalisa?
Tradition holds that it gives intellect, memory, clear speech and learning. The Chalisa itself promises the joy of children, release from danger and poverty, and freedom from bondage. In Jyotish it is the remedy for a weak Mercury or Jupiter.
What are the rules for reading it?
There are no hard rules. Bathe, sit in a clean place, light a lamp before the goddess, offer white or yellow flowers and read the whole text with correct pronunciation. No fast is required; on Basant Panchami the custom is sattvic food and yellow clothes.
