ॐ जय गंगे माता गंगा मैया की सबसे प्रसिद्ध आरती है। इसका रचयिता ज्ञात नहीं है; यह लोक-परम्परा से चली आई रचना है और ॐ जय जगदीश हरे की धुन पर गाई जाती है। हरिद्वार, ऋषिकेश और काशी के घाटों पर संध्या की गंगा आरती में, गंगा दशहरा और कार्तिक पूर्णिमा के स्नान पर, और घरों में गंगाजल की पूजा के समय यही आरती गूँजती है।

Om Jai Gange Mata is the best-known aarti of Mother Ganga. Its author is not known; it has come down through popular tradition and is sung to the tune of Om Jai Jagdish Hare. It is the aarti heard at the evening Ganga aarti on the ghats of Haridwar, Rishikesh and Kashi, at the holy bath of Ganga Dussehra and Kartik Purnima, and in homes when Gangajal is worshipped.
The aarti calls Ganga a mother bright as the moon, whose water flows pure, who carries across everyone who comes to her for refuge; it also recalls how she freed the sons of King Sagar. The text below follows the book '51 Chalisa Sangrah Artiyon Sahit' of Randhir Prakashan, Haridwar, and under each stanza is a plain meaning. आरती कैसे करेंHow the aarti is done
घर में गंगा आरती के लिए स्नान करके स्वच्छ वस्त्र पहनें और पूजा-स्थान पर गंगा माता का चित्र या गंगाजल से भरा कलश रखें। कलश पर रोली और अक्षत लगाएँ, पुष्प चढ़ाएँ और घी का दीपक जलाएँ। पहले गणेश जी को प्रणाम करें, फिर गंगा माता का ध्यान करें।
थाली में दीपक या कपूर रखकर, घंटी बजाते हुए यह आरती गाएँ और थाली को घड़ी की दिशा में घुमाएँ। पहले टेक 'ॐ जय गंगे माता' गाई जाती है और हर पद के बाद सब मिलकर उसे दोहराते हैं। घाट पर आरती करते हैं तो कई लोग अन्त में दीपक जल में प्रवाहित करते हैं।
आरती के बाद ज्योति पर हाथ फेरकर आँखों और सिर से लगाएँ, थोड़ा गंगाजल सब पर छिड़कें और प्रसाद बाँटें। ध्यान रखें कि नदी में कोई ऐसी वस्तु न डाली जाए जो उसे मैला करे; गंगा की पूजा उसकी स्वच्छता की रक्षा भी है।
For the Ganga aarti at home, bathe, put on clean clothes and place a picture of Mother Ganga, or a kalash filled with Gangajal, at the place of worship. Mark the kalash with roli and rice grains, offer flowers and light a ghee lamp. Bow first to Ganesha, then bring Mother Ganga to mind.
Place the lamp or camphor on a plate, ring the bell, sing this aarti and move the plate clockwise. The refrain, Om Jai Gange Mata, is sung first, and everyone repeats it together after each stanza. When the aarti is done on a ghat, many people float the lamp on the water at the end.
After the aarti, pass the hands over the flame and touch them to the eyes and the head, sprinkle a little Gangajal over everyone and share the prasad. Take care that nothing goes into the river that would foul it; worshipping Ganga also means keeping her clean.
सगर के पुत्र और गंगा का अवतरणThe sons of Sagar and the descent of Ganga
आरती के दूसरे पद में 'पुत्र सगर के तारे' कहा गया है। पुराणों की कथा है कि अयोध्या के राजा सगर के साठ हज़ार पुत्र अश्वमेध यज्ञ के घोड़े को खोजते हुए कपिल मुनि के आश्रम पहुँचे और उनका अपमान करने पर उनकी दृष्टि से भस्म हो गए। उनका उद्धार केवल स्वर्ग की गंगा के जल से ही हो सकता था।
सगर के वंश में अंशुमान और दिलीप के बाद राजा भगीरथ ने कठोर तप किया। गंगा पृथ्वी पर उतरने को तैयार हुईं, पर उनके वेग को सँभालने के लिए भगवान शिव ने उन्हें अपनी जटाओं में धारण किया। भगीरथ के पीछे-पीछे चलकर गंगा ने सगर-पुत्रों की राख को छुआ और वे मुक्त हो गए। इसी से गंगा का एक नाम भागीरथी है।
यही कारण है कि गंगा को पितरों का उद्धार करने वाली माना जाता है, और श्राद्ध, अस्थि-विसर्जन तथा तर्पण में गंगाजल का विशेष स्थान है। आरती का 'शरण पड़े जो तेरी, सो नर तर जाता' इसी विश्वास को स्वर देता है।
The second stanza says Ganga set free the sons of Sagar. The Puranas tell how the sixty thousand sons of King Sagar of Ayodhya, searching for the horse of his ashvamedha sacrifice, reached the hermitage of the sage Kapila, insulted him, and were burnt to ashes by his gaze. Only the water of the heavenly Ganga could free them.
In Sagar's line, after Anshuman and Dilip, King Bhagiratha performed a long and severe penance. Ganga agreed to descend to earth, and Shiva caught her in his matted hair so that the force of her fall would not shatter the world. Following Bhagiratha, Ganga touched the ashes of Sagar's sons and they were set free. That is why she is also called Bhagirathi.
This is the reason Ganga is held to be the one who frees the ancestors, and why Gangajal has a special place in shraddha, the immersion of ashes and tarpan. The line of the aarti that says whoever takes refuge in her crosses over gives voice to this belief.
महत्वMeaning
यह छोटी-सी आरती गंगा के तीन रूप दिखाती है: वह माता है जो मन की इच्छा पूरी करती है, वह निर्मल धारा है जिसकी ज्योति चन्द्रमा जैसी है, और वह तारिणी है जो शरण में आए को संसार-सागर से पार उतारती है।
अन्तिम दो पद इसका फल बताते हैं: एक बार भी शरण में आने वाले का यम का भय मिटता है, और जो प्रतिदिन यह आरती गाता है, वह सहज ही मुक्ति पाता है। इसलिए गंगा-तट से दूर रहने वाले लोग भी घर में गंगाजल के सामने यह आरती गाकर गंगा का स्मरण करते हैं।
This short aarti shows Ganga in three forms: the mother who fulfils the wishes of the heart, the pure stream whose light is like the moon's, and the one who carries across everyone who comes to her for refuge.
The last two stanzas give the fruit: whoever takes refuge in her even once loses the fear of Yama, and whoever sings this aarti every day attains liberation with ease. That is why people who live far from the river sing it before a vessel of Gangajal at home and so remember Ganga.
